Iago looking to launch at NZ Derby from Gisborne race on drier track
The well-related Iago will use a better surface at Gisborne on Sunday to further his Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) preparation.
Rain-affected going at Ellerslie for the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) has forced Team Rogerson to opt for the Gisborne Refrigeration 2000m.
“It’s too wet at Ellerslie for him, he needs a good track,” Graeme Rogerson said. “I’m very happy with him and Chris Johnson will ride him.”
Out of the Group 2 Waikato Cup (2400m) winner Passchendaele, Iago has won once from five appearances and finished runner-up against the older horses at Te Rapa last time out.
