Hill Smith Stakes betting preview
The Listed Hill Smith Stakes is the feature event on the nine-race card at Morphettville on Saturday. A field of 12 is set to compete for a share in the $100,000 prize pool. There looks to be a nice blend of local gallopers and interstate rivals, with plenty of different form lines to go from. The 1800m race is set to jump at 4:11pm local time.
It was hard to miss the dominant second-up performance of Anthony Freedman’s 3YO colt when he bolted in at Sale. Prior to his maiden win, he had been racing in Metropolitan meetings in Melbourne and was far from disgraced. From barrier six, you would expect Dom Tourneur to settle him towards the back of the field. When asked for an effort, this colt should prove a bit too classy for this field.
Tony McEvoy’s 3YO gelding looked to have a bit left in the tank when badly held up at a crucial point last time out at Flemington, but he still managed to finish within just over a length of the winner. He has had one previous start on rain-affected ground when bolting in under a hold at Murray Bridge back in June. It will be his first start over the 1800m, but if his last start is anything to go by, then he should be fighting out the finish.
The extra 200m should be a benefit for this Leon Macdonald-trained gelding, who looked a good thing when beaten last time out after not much went right for him on the Parks circuit. He may take a sit just off the leaders from barrier four and try to take up the running early in the home straight.
