HorseBetting.com.au’s NSW racing experts brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the eight-race meeting at Hawkesbury on Thursday, including a pick in the Listed Rowley Mile. The track is rated a Good 4 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course. The first race of the day is set to begin at 12:45pm, while the feature race will go at 4:25pm AEST.

Listed Rowley Mile: Kukeracha

The 2021 Queensland Derby winner resumes in the Listed Rowley Mile in what looks to be a very winnable race. Trained by Chris Waller and to be ridden by James McDonald again, this son of Night Of Thunder carries plenty of residual fitness off the back of a very good Winter Carnival. Kukeracha has had two trials this month, including a soft 1.5-length victory on August 13 over 1000m. The four-year-old gelding has had three starts over 1600m for a win and a third, the latter coming in the Queensland Guineas behind Private Eye in May. Drawn in barrier one, he should be able to land in a perfect spot and be well within striking distance. He brings a good amount of class to what is a pretty average edition of the Rowley.

Hawkesbury Best Bet: Flying Crazy

Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou will leg up Jay Ford aboard their ultra-impressive debut winner Flying Crazy. The three-year-old gelding spotted the leaders a massive start on debut on the Kensington track at Randwick and absolutely flew home down the middle to get up in the final stride, beating Devil’s Throat. While this is a harder race against some horses who figured during the Sydney Autumn Carnival – namely A Very Fine Red, Bourbon Flyer and Conrad – this son of Flying Artie already has a first-up run under his belt and should definitely improve second-up, so he might just be too fit for some of these resuming gallopers. Ford rode Flying Crazy on debut, so he will know what to do, and barrier five should be a touch kinder and allow them to settle closer in the run. There is plenty of speed on paper again, which will allow something from the back to run on. A repeat of his debut closing sectionals puts Flying Crazy in the winner’s stall again.

Next Best Bet at Hawkesbury: Cobia

Brad Widdup and Tim Clark combine in the closer with last-start winner Cobia. The four-year-old son of Hinchinbrook comes into this run third-up, which should see him reaching peak fitness levels now. At Kembla Grange last time out, he was shuffled back after settling midfield but then let down strongly to win by half a length. Jumping from barrier six on Thursday under the top weight of 60.5kg, Clark will settle handier than usual, given there is a lack of speed on paper outside of Musume. Clark partnered Cobia last start, so he knows the horse, and this looks a good race for the gelding to make it three wins from six starts.

Best Value Bet at Hawkesbury: Different Strokes

Kim Waugh’s Different Strokes has only had one career start, which was at Newcastle on August 7, and really impressed when third as a $21 chance. The winner of that race was Military Expert, who finished second to King Of Sparta on debut before placing fourth as favourite at Rosehill at his next start, while the second-placed Retrieval is no mug either. King Of Sparta won in very good fashion on Saturday at Kembla Grange, so we are hoping that those form lines continue to produce winners here. Different Strokes will be partnered by James McDonald, who from barrier nine is likely to settle in the second half of the field again. Although the margin was 3.9 lengths on debut, the winner and second horse in that race both go quite well and he was closing in late, so the rise from 1200m to 1300m should suit this son of Hinchinbrook. At these odds, we are happy to have a go.
