Happy Clapper favourite for Epsom

Happy Clapper
Tramway Stakes winner Happy Clapper is the Epsom Handicap favourite and likely topweight.

Happy Clapper will be the topweight for the Epom Handicap with those weighted above him unlikely to run in the $1 million race.

The Pat Webster-trained gelding was given 56.5kg when weights were released on Monday for the September 30 race over the Randwick mile.

This preparation Happy Clapper has won the Group Two Tramway Stakes (1400m) and finished second to Winx in Saturday’s Group One George Main Stakes (1600m).

Above him in the Epsom weights on 58kg are Black Heart Bart, Humidor and Le Romain with Vega Magic on 57kg but slated for a spot in the $10 million Everest.

Weights will be raised to accommodate a minimum top weight of 57kg.

Happy Clapper is the $4.50 favourite for the race ahead of Egg Tart ($6) and her Chris Waller-trained stablemates Comin’ Through, Foxplay and Tom Melbourne all at $11.

Egg Tart and Comin’ Through both have 50.5kg while Tom Melbourne has been given a kilo more.

Last year’s Australian Derby winner Tavago is the 58kg topweight for the Metropolitan Handicap ahead of the Waller-trained Libran and Who Shot Thebarman on 57kg.

Libran is the $6 favourite following his win in Saturday’s Kingston Town Stakes (2000m).

Stablemate Antonio Giuseppe, who ran second in the Kingston Town and third placed Life Less Ordinary are on the second line at $8.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Broadside, winner of Friday’s Newcastle Cup, is at $11 alongside Kellstorm and Up ‘N’ Rolling.
