Gwenneth set for the Typhoon Tracy if successful on Friday night

THE MBH racing team know what it takes to win the Typhoon Tracy Stakes and if three-year-old Gwenneth salutes in the Cathay Pacific Cup at the Valley tonight that will be the targeted race for the talented filly.

The race team took out last year’s Typhoon Tracy Stakes after Almighty Girl toppled the short-priced favourite Secret Agenda as the +480 elect, and trainer Mitchell Beer believes they have a prospect which could potentially make it back-to-back wins in the group 3 race for the stable in three weeks time.

The first step is the sixth race on the card at Moonee Valley on Friday night, which Beer confirmed would be the event his filly needs to win if it is to compete again in just under a month at the Valley.

“If she wins tonight then she’ll have a tilt at the Typhoon Tracy Stakes in three weeks.” Beer told Horsebetting.com.au.

The precocious filly has had great success in its career so far. Across its six race starts the daughter of Reward for Effort has won twice and placed twice. Since breaking her maiden in mid-November the three-year-old has yet to miss a placing in its three subsequent races.

Beer believes the preparation has been ideal for the bench mark 70 race on Friday night.

“She’s had quite a few runs this time in,” the trainer said.

“She’s rock hard fit (and) had a good gap between runs. She was beaten by a pretty smart Colt in Into Orbit last start.”

Gwenneth has sensational form lines coming into Friday night but still lacks the experience of some of its main rivals including the Robbie Laing-trained Little Indian and the unbeaten Wez Hunter-guided Magnatti.

Beer said the Laing trained mare looms as the biggest threat to his elect.

“The older, proven mares are always hard to beat,” he said. “You are getting good at the weights being a three-year-old filly but it is quite hard to take on the more seasoned mares.

“Little Indian has probably proven herself at a higher level and she’s probably the one to beat.”

While Beer was quick to praise the older rival Little Indian prior to the race, the trainer does not believe that stepping up against much more experienced campaigners will negatively impact Gwenneth come race time.

Despite having 14 less races then the $4 fixed odds favourite Little Indian at Crownbet.com.au Beer believes the race is within Gwenneth’s reach.

“She’s won against the older mares two starts ago, she’ll run really well.”
