2020 Grand Prix Stakes betting preview

The Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes is a 2200m affair for three-year-olds that will take place on Boxing Day at Eagle Farm. After an impressive win at Sydney last start, The Elanora is a firm favourite ahead of Mr Gee, See Marie and Dhakuri. Stablemates and rank outsiders Aliraaj and Mt Mort Shark will look to lead, with The Elanora and Atonement likely to be not all that far away.

Tony Haydon saddles up maiden galloper Dune Forty Five here, and we are very keen on his chances at 30/1. The son of Americain hasn’t by any means been an eye-catcher or a good thing beaten in any of his three starts, but he has looked to be crying out for the kind of trip he gets here. Last start he was a tough competitor when fourth to Good Soize in the Eagle Way over 1800m. He has drawn well in gate seven under Justin Huxtable and can win this if it turns out to be a genuine staying test.

Robbie Fradd jumps off Dune Forty Five to ride the Maher & Eustace-trained Toscanini, and that switch is worth paying attention to. The son of Fastnet Rock won back-to-back races at Newcastle and Hawkesbury over 1250m and 1300m respectively, then placed at Rosehill over 1500m and now finds himself over 2200m – an interesting progression, to say the least. He looks very smart and his best form is lengths better than anything else in this race, but he needs to be able to stay. Nonetheless, he is a good price to find out if he will get the trip or not.

Chris Waller’s The Elanora was nothing but brilliant when winning by two lengths at Rosehill last start over 1800m. The colt by Redoute’s Choice has won three from five starts and gets Glen Boss, who comes to form in Group races. Drawn out in barrier 12, he’ll look to go forward and be handy enough in the run. While he has won over a mile and 1800m, the 2200m is another level that he needs to handle. If he overdoes it early from the wide draw, he will be his own worst enemy. He looks the X-factor and is a deserving favourite, but we just don’t want to back him at that price from the outside alley.
