Grafton horse racing preview

An eight-race card is set down for judgement on Tuesday at Grafton in northern New South Wales. The track is a Soft 5 at the time of writing, but we should be on a Good 4 by the time the first race jumps at 1:35pm AEDT. Large fields have been accepted throughout the day, and we look set for a competitive card of racing.

Best BetRace 4 – Rose Bouquet (#13) $2.60 with Sportsbet

Daniel Bowen and Matthew McGuren team up with Rose Bouquet, who seems to be building up to her maiden victory. If she had settled better during the run at Lismore a week ago, she may have finished closer than what she actually did. She is drawn to do no work here form the inside barrier and clearly has the best turn of foot in the race. If she settles well and finds a prominent position, there doesn’t look like there is much capable of beating her in this.

Next BestRace 1 – Urbino (#1) $3.40 with Sportsbet

Kris Lees and Andrew Mallyon combine in the opening race in a bid to build on the impressive record this 6YO gelding is putting together. He has only two wins from 15 starts, but his 10 minor placings include eight runner-up efforts. He will be there or thereabouts in the concluding stages – it’s just a matter of whether he can get the job done. He got too far back at Kempsey last time out and couldn’t peg back the margin set by the winner, but the extra 400m will make him hard to beat in this.

Best ValueRace 3 – Scatman (#6) $6.50 with Sportsbet

Paul Grills’ 4YO gelding has been putting together consistent performances of late and strikes a winnable maiden here at Grafton. He seemed to get too far back in his last run a week ago at Armidale but lengthened out nicely to claim second. If he can show a little more gate speed than he did in that run, where he was a bit sluggish at the start, he should find himself with cover just off the speed and give you a nice sight throughout the running.
