Gosford horse racing preview

Gosford plays host to just the six midweek metropolitan races on Wednesday. The track is rated a Good 4, and the rail is in the true position for the entire circumference of the course, which should set up a great afternoon’s racing. Race 1 will jump at 2pm local time.

Best BetRace 1 – Head Legislator (#1) $3.10 with Sportsbet

The first horse in the race book looks the best bet of the day as he resumes for his second career preparation. Head Legislator from the Matt Dunn yard over-raced on debut on the Kensington track at Randwick when racing in restricted room, but he has since been gelded and trialled much better than he did prior to last prep. The form out of his debut race has seen a stack of horses salute, which should bode well for him here. Drawn barrier seven, he should show enough early toe to settle in the first four. If he can let down like he did in his trial, he will be hard to beat here.

Next BestRace 5 – Ready To Soar (#4) $5 with Sportsbet

Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou saddle up Gosford specialist Ready To Soar. After winning her last two races impressively at this track, the three-year-old filly will be shooting for three in a row on Wednesday against some familiar opposition. James Innes Jr will take the More Than Ready filly to the front and look to make every post a winner. Given that there is a bit of speed in the race, the drop back in trip to 1100m is likely to suit, especially if she has to work early from barrier nine. We think she can win again, but the $5 is a solid each-way price.

Best ValueRace 2 – Pumbaa Rua (#2) $4.80 with Sportsbet

There was a bit of a tip going around a fortnight ago for this boy when he debuted at Gosford at any old price. He ran a great third, although there was no third dividend due to only seven starters. He now lines up in an 1100m maiden, back 100m in trip, which is some query given how well he hit the line last start, but we are happy to side with the Grant Allard-trained four-year-old here. Aaron Bullock is a promising booking, as he is a strong rider and the horse looks like he needs someone to really lift him. Pumbaa Rua will be better for the experience from his debut run, and if he can get around the tight-turning track better than he did last time, he will be a serious threat late.
