Gosford racing preview

What Gosford Races
Where Gosford Race Club – 4 Racecourse Rd, West Gosford NSW 2250
When Wednesday, December 28, 2022
First Race 2:05pm AEDT

Wednesday afternoon sees racing back at Gosford Race Club for a seven-race program including two feature races set down for decision. The Group 3 Belle Of The Turf (1600m) and the Listed Level Gosford Guineas (1200m) make for an appetising prospect for connections with a combined total of $400,000 in prizemoney on offer. We should be in for terrific conditions on Wednesday afternoon with little to no rain forecast leading in, meaning we’ll be likely to racing on a good to firm track along with the rail placed in the true position the entire circuit. You’ll be wanting to favour on speed runners, however, some races the map will be critical so don’t dismiss some backmarkers, particularly late in the day.

The first race is scheduled to get underway at 2:05pm AEDT.

Belle Of The Turf Best Bet: Lovely Esteem

We’ve looked for a little bit of value in the first of the two features at Gosford on Wednesday afternoon with the Chris Waller-trained Lovely Esteem. She profiles well for this Group 3 race over the mile for the fillies and mares and should be competitive on an each-way basis after a first-up performance that had a lot of merit. She got caught up in behind a wall of horses when going down to stablemate Democracy Manifest on December 10 and was better than the 3.1 length margin may suggest as she never saw daylight until last 100m. From barrier four in a race with a stack of on speed horses in this race, it looks a perfect set up for this daughter of Siyouni to just in behind them again before getting clear running with the light weight of 55kg and senior jockey Kerrin McEvoy booked to ride. This looks like Lovely Esteem’s best chance to break her Australian maiden and it could we be in this Gosford feature.

Gosford Guineas Best Bet: Russian Conquest

The Gosford Guineas is a three-year-old feature over the 1200m sprint, and we’re keen to be with the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained filly Russian Conquest. She returns after a short 77-day spell and looks to be flying after an eye-catching barrier trial win at Randwick on December 13 by 0.2 lengths. She sat wide the entire trial before only being asked for a minor effort and promptly put them away with ease. The key factor for us is the Good 4 surface likely for race-day as this filly by Russian Revolution just hasn’t been able to produce her best turn-of-foot assets on mostly wet tracks in both her two-year-old and early three-year-old seasons. She’s a superstar on the rise and we think it’s no coincidence the team have lined this race up for her fresh as she’s proven to be most effective with spaces between her runs. She’s drawn awkwardly from barrier 11, however, the in-form Regan Bayliss takes the reins here and she only needs cover somewhere mid-field before storming over the top of her rivals.

Gosford Best Bet Of The Day: Divots

We’ve found a very promising first starter on Wednesday afternoon in the form of Divots trained out of the team Hawkes yard. She’s had only one barrier trial to her name, however, she already looks a very promising type coming to this 1100m maiden contest. She was hard held throughout her 900m jump out at Rosehill on December 8 and was still able to put a 1.5 length margin into the second horse, then a lot further margin into the rest. She’s been scratched on a few occasions leading into this race for various reasons including barrier draws and likely the toughness of opposition, and the fact that despite drawing wide again, this seems like the target race for this daughter of Zoustar. The wide barrier isn’t ideal, however, if they’re happy to start her campaign on Wednesday afternoon, we’re willing to let top jockey Jason Collett find some cover mid-race before replicating her trial form to the track. She’s come up short enough in the market for her first-up assignment but purely on what we’ve seen she’s clearly the on top pick and finds the best of the day tag to boot.
