Golden Slipper 2022: Market still looking for a standout

Russian Conquest racing news

Six weeks out till from the Golden Slipper Stakes and still no one is putting their hand up to say, “I’m the one to beat”.

In years gone by there’s always been a couple of standouts like Stay Inside, Farnan, She Will Reign and Capitalist, to name a few.

The Maher & Eustace-trained Coolangatta heads the betting at $4 (Sportsbet.com.au) with the Snowden-trained Russian Conquest at $8 and a host of other horses at $15, including Inglis Millennium winner Xtravagant Star and third-place getter Sejardin.

Have we seen the Slipper winner yet?

We still have Metallicity to debut in the Coolmore Pierro Plate at Randwick this coming Saturday. As it stands he’s at $15 with online bookmakers. The Snowden-trained horse was set to go around at $1.30 in the Davali Handicap (1100m) a few weeks back but was a late scratching. Sweet Ride took that race out at $10 and was installed at $15 for the Slipper; however, the Annabel Neasham-colt has subsequently been taken out of the all-in market after running fifth in the Millennium.

Maybe a horse like Shalatin could be the one? He was a massive run on debut for the Joe Pride stable last October in the Kirkham Plate, where he raced very green but finished off very strongly over the 1000m. Two weeks later the colt was sent around at $4 in the Golden Gift alongside fellow Slipper fancy Sejardin and wasn’t disgraced, finishing strongly for second with Sejardin taking the spoils. Shalatin has trialed well since and could be the big query runner if he gains a start.

Best Of Bordeaux and Queen Of The Ball have been the best of the rest so far, but unless one pops up from nowhere in the coming weeks, we suggest sticking with one of the horses we have already mentioned here.

The $8 on offer for Russian Conquest looks much more appetising than the $4 about Coolangatta, as the former was only beaten 0.2 lengths in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast three weeks ago. But is that the form you want to go off? Based on past years, maybe not. But this year, what is the form you want to follow with no real standouts? It remains to be seen.
