Feature Race Race 8: Australian Turf Club Trophy

Nine races will be run and won at the Aquis Park Gold Coast this weekend for the QTIS Jewel meeting. Rain has arrived at Surfer’s Paradise on Thursday, with over 60 millilitres said to be recorded on course, so we will be racing on a Heavy 10, with the rail in the true position. Race 1 is set to jump at 12:18pm.

Best Bet: Sweet Dolly

Kevin Hansen’s unbeaten filly Sweet Dolly is a genuine star. After bolting in at Townsville on debut without being touched by Justin Stanley, she then came to town and took out the Listed Calaway Gal, defeating Fake Love, who has beaten Anamoe who is Group 1 placed and won the Todman Stakes last start. She then went back home and won a trial at Rockhampton by nearly 13 lengths, and then franked that trial win with a four and a half length victory on a Soft 6 at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago. She has done it all within herself to date, she has gate speed and she looks as though she will handle the wet. It’s scary to think what she could do if Stanley has to use the whip, she could be a star and probably would have been competitive in a Golden Slipper.

Best BetRace 6 – Sweet Dolly (#7) $1.50 with Sportsbet

Next Best: Sugar Boom

Tony Gollan and Michael Rodd combine in the third with speedy mare, Sugar Boom. The four-year-old daughter of Spirit of Boom won at this track and distance back on the ninth of January by two and a half lengths, and looks very hard to beat again in similar conditions. The speedster has only had one start on heavy going, which came in the QTIS 2YO Jewel two years ago to the day, so we are happy to forgive her for that. Drawn gate six under Rodd, she will go straight to the front and simply will not be caught. She has speed and class to burn and is just better than these.

Best Value: Metson

Gary Duncan will leg up Bobby El-Issa in the opener aboard six-year-old gelding Metson. The son of Canford Cliffs has won five races from 31 starts with three of those coming when second up, and two of them being on rain affected tracks. He hasn’t missed the top two in three Heavy track runs, and maps to get all of the favours from barrier 11 outside the leader. He faded to finish last at the Sunshine Coast, but that was a hard day to make ground and he looked to get a bit lost on the big straight and was outclassed in Open company. He rises 3.5kg, but he drops back to Benchmark 75 and has to be respected in the opener.

Best ValueRace 1 – Metson (#10) $41 with Sportsbet
