Goldmarket Handicap Best Bet: Totally Charmed
While this race will be packer-punched full of hype surrounding the return of Alligator Blood, we are confident that Totally Charmed can spoil the party at the $8 quote. The Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted-trained seven-year-old was a dominant winner first-up over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast, before running on very well into fourth at Doomben to finish just over a length behind Shooting For Gold over 1110m on August 7. The son of I Am Invincible has almost never run a bad race, finishing in the first three on 14 occasions in just 19 career starts. The lightly raced galloper will jump out of barrier one under Steph Thornton, and with just 54kg on his back, he should be running home strongly over a hot tempo. We will, of course, be keeping a close eye on Group 1 winner Alligator Blood as he steps out for the first time since the 2020 Spring Carnival.
Race 7 – Totally Charmed (#6)Gold Coast Best Bet: Morethannumberone
Michael Costa has been flying of late, and one horse who has added to his good strike rate is Morethannumberone. The son of More Than Ready was a brilliant winner at Grafton first-up, before being nosed out by the smallest of margins at Doomben behind Lasting Kiss. With a month between runs, this promising sprinter should be fresh as a daisy and ready to run a big race again. Andrew Mallyon has partnered this two-time winner at his last two starts, so he will know what it takes to secure another victory. Barrier 10 is a touch awkward, but the five-year-old gelding will likely settle towards the rear and be steaming home again. He is a nice horse to follow through the grades.
Race 8 – Morethannumberone (#3)Gold Coast Value Bet: Spokesman
Chris Waller and Luke Dittman combine in the second leg of the quaddie with impressive last-start winner Spokesman. Although it had been a good while between runs, the son of Press Statement looped the field and went on to win comfortably in Benchmark 62 company with 59.5kg on his back at Doomben on August 4. This is quite an open Benchmark 0-70, but he does drop 1.5kg from his last win, rises from 1300m to 1400m, and finds a race with enough speed to set it up for him to run home from the back, which he will have to do from barrier 12. Dittman does the steering after James Orman hops off to ride the stablemate Fortified, who did run eighth in this year’s Queensland Derby with Orman in the saddle. Spokesman looks to be in a nice race to go back-to-back.
