Feature Race Group 2 Hollindale Stakes – Race 8

The Gold Coast will host their standalone meeting this weekend, with a number of feature races including the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes. A big nine race card is upon us, and with drying conditions over the coming days, we should be in for a great day of racing. The track is currently a Heavy 8, but we expect to see an upgrade before race one. The rail is in the true position for the entire circumference of the course. Horsebetting.com.au’s Queensland form analyst has had an in-depth look at every race to find you his top four selections for all nine races, as well his best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting which will jump at 11:25am.

Race 1 – Benchmark 78 (1800m)

It is a wide open Benchmark 78 to open proceedings on Saturday, but we are siding with the one runner who we believe has the most upside. That is Michael Costa’s Olympic Class, who comes off a bullish win first-up at the Sunshine Coast last Friday. The son of Olympic Glory won by 1.5 lengths over the 1400m journey on a Soft 7 on April 30, and now steps up to 1800m for the first time which looks as though it will suit him. Costa has nominated him for the Queensland Derby, so he clearly has an opinion of this son of Olympic Glory and expects plenty of him. Drawn barrier one, he will either lead or be in the box seat and he should be very hard to beat. Cellarmaid will appreciate getting to 1800m for the first time campaign and should enjoy dropping from Listed level to a BM78.
Selections: 13-4-1-2

Race 2 – Bat Out Of Hell (900m)

Don’t blink or you’ll miss this year’s Bat Out Of Hell. Run over 900m, these sprinters are sure to scorch the turf. One mare who has the speed to burn here is Tony Gollan’s Niedorp. The four-year-old mare has a terrific first-up record and should appreciate the easier level of racing after coming through the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Classic at this course. She has won on a soft track in the past, and she has plenty of gate speed to find the front early from barrier one. Glen Boss does the riding which is advantageous. Sugar Boom is the clear danger if the track dries up.
Selections: 6-4-3-2

Race 3 – Gold Coast Cup (2400m)

There isn’t many of these who deserve a Gold Coast Cup win next to their name if we are brutally honest, but one that does is Maryann Brosnan’s Traduce. The four-year-old son of Savabeel has been a progressive stayer, and has won his last two races at Eagle Farm, including a win over 2212m on May 1st. Robbie Fradd has stuck with the rising stayer which is a push, and he was quite adamant after Saturday’s win that he would be a horse to follow over the upcoming Brisbane Winter Carnival. He has drawn to box seat from barrier three and is in this on the minimum. Lord Belvedere is his main danger and should find this easier than his last few runs.
Selection: 7-2-8-1

Race 4 – Listed Goldmarket (1200m)

Best Bet Of The Day

The Listed Goldmarket is the first of the black-type races on Saturday, and it shapes to be a terrific contest, with a number of these horses likely to be in and around the money in races like the Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich, Weetwood Handicap at Toowoomba and the Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast over the Queensland Carnival. Racecourse Road has been racing brilliantly this campaign with two wins from two starts, including a first-up romp on a Heavy 9 at this track. He then went to Doomben and defeated the very talented Jadentom over 1200m, and now should be peaking third-up. He is undefeated at the Gold Coast, has five wins from nine starts on wet tracks and is drawn perfectly in barrier three for Ron Stewart. All of the boxes are ticked.
Selections: 3-1-11-6

Race 5 – Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m)

The two-year-olds will contest the Ken Russell Memorial Classic in a bid to earn some black type as they head towards the J.J. Atkins in a few weeks. While Chris Waller’s Ranch Hand also holds an acceptance at Gosford on Saturday, James McDonald has been booked to ride him here so that’s where we assume he will head and it looks winnable for him. After winning well on debut at Warwick Farm, he was thrown in the deep end relatively quickly which culminated in a fifth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at this track and distance. He will be right in this from barrier three. Local hope Debussy can run a big race, while Cork Harbour’s last start victory was franked when Astrologer won on Wednesday at Canterbury.
Selections: 4-5-6-7

Race 6 – Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m)

Best Value Bet

A field of 14 three-year-old fillies has been assembled for the Gold Coast Bracelet, with these staying fillies on a Queensland Oaks path. Good Soize has been a filly we have been keen on for some time with the Oaks in mind and after her first-up run our thesis was proven. She returned in brilliant fashion to really run home strongly over the mile in the Listed Princess Stakes. Tony Gollan has also said she’s his Oaks horse which is a big rap. She has drawn wide in barrier 14 which is a concern, but there is a decent amount of speed in this to set it up for a backmarker of her ability. $13 is absurd.
Selections: 3-1-7-5

Best ValueRace 6 – Good Soize (#3) $13.00 with Sportsbet

Race 7 – Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m)

One of the races of the day is the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas. One horse that ticks all the boxes is Rex Lipp’s Simply Fly. The gelded son of Spirit Of Boom has won at this track and distance against very similar opposition just three starts ago on a Heavy 9, he has the wet track box ticked, he loves the Gold Coast and 1200m third-up off a slight freshen up is just what the doctor would have ordered. He dumped the jockey shortly after jumping out of the gates last start, but he came through that unscathed and has been back to the trials where he looked very good. He will be in the second half of the field from barrier 10 but can certainly be winning again.
Selections: 3-6-10-2

Race 8 – Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m)

The highlight of the afternoon is the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes, and while this capacity field is only running for Group 2 honours, it is a star-studded line up, full of Group 1 performers. Chris Waller’s Shared Ambition was a very good winner at Rosehill Gardens last start and comes to this off a freshen up which will suit. The son of Born To Sea will relish the wet track on Saturday, and he is yet to miss the top two placings over 1800m. Jim Byrne rides the Gold Coast track better than most jockeys, so his booking is another advantage. He can go forward from barrier eight and be in this for a long way. The class horses in this field and clear dangers are Avilius, Fifty Stars and Zaaki, but all three might be peaking in two week’s time in the Doomben Cup.
Selections: 6-2-1-7

Race 9 – Listed Silk Stocking (1400m)

Next Best Bet

Fillies & Mares are set to contest the Silk Stocking over 1400m, and again it is a wide open betting race. Wonderful Riri has really stamped her footprint on Queensland racing since relocating from Victoria earlier in the year, with the five-year-old mare now a two-time winner from just three starts here in the Sunshine State. She does rise from a Class 6 to a Listed event, but back against her own sex will be of aid. Barrier six will see her settle midfield with cover under Ben Thompson, and she should be going very close to winning again on the wet track which she loves. Akage could be a blowout; she loves the Gold Coast.
Selections: 7-9-4-13

Next BestRace 9 – Wonderful Riri (#7) $4.80 with Sportsbet
