Global Glamour leads all the way in Group 1 Flight Stakes
THE 2016 Golden Slipper form took another hit at Randwick on Saturday as Global Glamour upset race-favourite Yankee Rose in the Group 1 Flight Stakes.
The Waterhouse/Bott-trained filly had endured a tough campaign to date, but jockey Tim Clark took bad luck out of the equation by heading forward on the three-year-old which led all the way in an impressive victory.
“It’s been a awhile since I’ve been in the group one winners stall, it’s a good feeling,” Clark said.
“Global Glamour had been missing the jump in recent starts, but it was jet-propelled out of the barriers and Clark never looked back.
“The start was all-important today. Master stroke by Gai and Adrian putting the barrier blanket on her, keep her calm,” Clark said.
“Although she was still going a little bit keen within herself through the run, she wasn’t going that quick. It was going to take a good one to run me down.
“I think this filly just hadn’t had a great deal of luck of late. Small field, inside draw and getting her to jump took all the bad luck out of play.”
The daughter of Star Witness ($6 at CrownBet) had been working home well behind Foxplay in the Furious Stakes followed by the Tea Rose Stakes and it was only a matter of time before it secured a memorable win.
This was the ninth Flight Stakes win for Gai Waterhouse and the first for co-trainer Adrian Bott who was over the moon with the result.
“Absolutely incredible,” Bott said. “Typical stable fashion, jump to the front, control it. It was good to watch.
“We’ve known she’s always had the ability. It’s a very good feeling, one I’ll cherish forever.
Yankee Rose wasn’t disgraced in second place after Blake Shinn made a move around the home turn. It chased hard, but was never going to pick up Global Glamour.
Three of the high-profile Golden Slipper runners (Astern, Capitalist and Yankee Rose) all failed to win on Epsom Handicap day, which is a cause for concern as major spring racing carnival targets are approaching.
