Geelong tips, best bets and quaddie selections for January 7
Eight races will be run and won at Geelong on Thursday afternoon. The track is rated a Heavy 10, with the rail out +8m for the entire course. Race 1 jumps at 1:30pm.
Best Bet – Race 6 #4 Mnemba $2.25
Michael Kent unleashed Mnemba at this track 6 weeks ago and she couldn’t have been more impressive, winning 2L on a Heavy 9 track. She does rise 4kg here, but steps up slightly in trip and gets another Heavy track. Beau Mertens retains the ride on the four-year-old Helmet mare and will take her forward from barrier 6. She can go back-to-back here.
Next Best – Race 3 #4 Diamonds’n’stones $3.65
Team Hawkes will be hoping that their Brazen Beau gelding, Diamonds’n’stones at start five. After placing in three of his four starts, the three-year-old looks well placed to breakthrough over 1435m on a Heavy track. All three placings have come on soft track, so he should appreciate the wet track here. Noel Callow aboard from barrier 13 will see the gelding up rolling along on speed and should be too good got them.
Best Value – Race 7 #8 Savalona $9.50
Danny O’Brien and Damien Oliver combine with debut winner, Savalona. The three-year-old filly was an all the way winner at Colac on debut three weeks ago over 1100m, so the 1135m on a Heavy track should be her go. By Savabeel, she should eventually get a bigger trip, so if this is run more like a 1300m race, it may suit her even more.
