Geelong Cup Day betting preview

Geelong Cup Day sees a quality nine-race card set down for judgement from 12:30pm AEDT this Wednesday afternoon. The Listed Geelong Classic and the Group 3 Geelong Cup attract fields that would stand up on any Saturday city meeting. The feature holds a key for horses hoping to get further up the Melbourne Cup order of entry, and the form stacked up last year as Prince Of Arran took out the Geelong Cup and finished a close third in Australia’s most famous race.

Best BetRace 1 – Excelman (#2) $2.40 with Sportsbet

We were with Excelman last time out for his dominant all-the-way victory on Cranbourne Cup Day. With Damien Oliver retaining the ride, the Richard Laming-trained gelding rates quite highly in the opener on Geelong Cup Day. He was ridden more positively at Cranbourne, and that may be the strategy here as he jumps from barrier five and looks set to get an economical run into the race. He didn’t look like slowing down when hitting the line at Cranbourne and the extra 400m here should only benefit him.

Next BestRace 4 – Ocular (#10) $2.80 with Sportsbet

Shea Eden’s 4YO gelding bounced back with an impressive victory last time out at Bendigo after a poor showing down the straight at Flemington. He turned the tables on the in-form Yulong Storm, who defeated him at Flemington, and was too strong for The Gauch in the latter stages. Ben Allen retains the ride after that win at Bendigo and will have plenty of options from barrier five. Ocular maps to settle midfield, one off the rails, and seems to have the best turn of foot in a race full of consistent types.

Best ValueRace 9 – Moi Choux (#1) $14 with Sportsbet

We’re hoping Laming can bookend the card with Moi Choux in the last race on Geelong Cup Day. He teams up with Emily Brown, whose 3kg claim is a big help at the weights. The gelding finished midfield last time out at The Valley but had his fair share of excuses in the run. From barrier two he maps to be up on speed, where he is most comfortable. In what is a wide-open race, he looks to be a nice play at big odds for his first start at 1400m.
