Geelong racing tips & best bets – Tuesday, 22 December 2020

Long Jack

With Christmas only three days away, punters can start the celebrations early with Tuesday’s eight-race card at Geelong. It looks to be a competitive set of races, with not many short-priced favourites going around. The rail is out at the 3m mark for the meeting, the track has come up a Good 4, and the first race is set to jump at 1:30pm AEDT.

Best BetRace 6 – Rogue Star (#3) $5 with Sportsbet

Kym Hann and John Allen combine with Rogue Star, who is yet to finish worse than third from three career starts and boasts two victories. Despite wanting to lay in at his last-start win at Geelong, the four-year-old gelding was too strong for a couple of handy gallopers in a BM58. He steps up to a BM64 for this assignment, and the extra 100m looks to benefit him hugely. From barrier nine, he should into a positive position in the running and prove hard to hold out.

Next BestRace 5 – Jimenez (#9) $5 with Sportsbet

Jimenez was a dominant maiden winner two starts ago at Geelong when bolting in by four lengths on a rain-affected track. He comes back to midweek racing after being competitive at Sandown a fortnight ago and looks well placed to bring up his second career win. If he runs up to the effort two starts ago, he should win here at nice odds. From the wide barrier, Jake Noonan will look to settle Jimenez in the three-wide line with cover. Considering the turn of foot this horse possesses, he should prove incredibly hard to hold out in the opening leg of the quaddie.

Best ValueRace 8 – Pufnstuf (#1) $19 with Sportsbet

It was a complete forgive run for Pufnstuf at the Sandown Hillside track on his last start. After finishing some 22 lengths off the winner, it was found post race he had experienced respiratory issues in the running. Prior to that run at Sandown he had won two of his past three races and was a half-length third in the other race, showing that he is always there or thereabouts in the finish. He’s a horse who tends to settle towards the rear of the field, but with a genuine tempo expected, his turn of foot should have him fighting out the finish in the final event at Geelong.
