What Geelong Races
Where Geelong Racecourse – 99 Breakwater Rd, Breakwater VIC 3219
When Tuesday, April 18, 2023
First Race 1:30pm AEST

The solitary Victorian meeting for Tuesday will be held in Geelong, where a very competitive eight-race program is set down for decision. The track is rated a Heavy 9 following a deluge over the weekend, but with no rain forecast for Monday or Tuesday, it should improve into the Soft range by race day. The rail will be set to +3m for the entire circuit, with racing set to begin at 1:30pm AEST.

Best Bet at Geelong – Hellara

Danny O’Brien will bring his filly Hellara to Geelong for her third career start, in a 2YO Maiden Plate over 1212m, after having two starts late last year. This daughter of Hellbent finished two lengths behind Amur in her most recent start at Moonee Valley, and that colt has since finished third in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes and won the Group 3 Baillieu Handicap. The Soft or Heavy track that we expect to see on Tuesday is a bit of a question mark for this filly, who hasn’t seen anything worse than a Good 4 in her two career starts. John Allen rode her last, and his decision to stay with her gives us even more confidence that Hellara will be going to Geelong to break her maiden.

Next Best at Geelong – Destiny’s Delight

In the day’s final race, ex-Kiwi runner Destiny Delight will make her Australian debut for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stable in the Benchmark 0-64 Handicap over 1312m. This four-year-old mare had three starts across the ditch, breaking her maiden at Pukekohe on December 3 last year when winning by a nose over 1400m. Since arriving in Australia, the daughter of Proisir has competed in three quiet trials, finishing sixth, seventh, and eighth over 800m and 850m. It’s difficult to tell how she’s going just off her trial form, but she was very impressive when she broke her maiden. John Allen will ride Destiny’s Delight in her first start in Australia, and if the leaders run along in front and set a solid tempo, we should see this girl ripping down the outside to catch the leaders in the final stages.

Best Value at Geelong – Sistine Explorer

After leading all the way to win first-up over 1100m at Ararat on April 1, the Andrew Noblet-trained Sistine Explorer will be seeking back-to-back victories when steps out in the program’s penultimate event. Last time out, this daughter of Brazen Beau jumped from barrier six of eight and crossed the field to take the lead before kicking clear on the home turn to win by 2.3 lengths. We expect her to have taken natural improvement off that run, and with her staying in the Benchmark 0-64 Handicap grade, she looks a strong chance once again. Codi Morgan will stick with this mare after riding her to victory her first time out, and with the help of her 2kg claim and drawing barrier one, Sistine Explorer should be able to find the lead, hold the fence, and try to replicate her last-start win.
