Gawler racing preview

The Listed Gawler Cup is the feature event on Friday’s nine-race card at Gawler heading into a blockbuster weekend of Australian sport. With showers forecasted throughout the meeting, the Good 4 track may not last until the Gawler Cup – the final race on the card – but we don’t expect there to be too big of a downgrade. The first race on Gawler Cup Day is set to jump at 2:05pm local time.

Best BetRace 1 – Matas (#2) $1.60 with Sportsbet

Michael Hickmott’s 5YO mare was well backed when bolting in over 3000m at this track a fortnight ago. She was able to sustain a big run out wide and draw clear over the concluding stages to beat the short-priced favourite in a peach of a ride from Jessica Eaton, who retains the ride. They figure to be right in the finish again in this Jericho Cup heat. The extra 340m doesn’t seem to be an issue for Matas, who is a deserving favourite and will take a power of beating.

Next BestRace 6 – Tullys Gold (#5) $2.40 with Sportsbet

Ryan Balfour and Todd Pannell team up with Tullys Gold, who is yet to run outside of the quinella in four career starts and looks well placed to bring up his second career victory here in the opening leg of the quaddie. The 4YO gelding seemingly had every possible chance to claim victory in his first-up run at Morphettville, but he found one better over the concluding stages. He shouldn’t have any issue getting up on pace from barrier four, and with a bit of luck at the top of the straight, he should prove hard to hold out.

Best ValueRace 7 – The Publikin (#11) $10 with Sportsbet

Grant Kluske’s 5YO mare had no luck when off the track first up at Strathalbyn four weeks back, yet she still only went down half a length as a well-backed favourite. She shouldn’t have to worry about being three wide, no cover this time around after drawing barrier three, but she could be ridden positively to be up on speed. She has three runner-up efforts when second up, and we’re tipping she can run up to that form and perhaps go one better here.
