Gawler racing preview – February 10, 2021

Gawler will host a big nine-part card on Wednesday afternoon when horse racing continues in South Australia for another week. The rail is out 5m for the entire circuit, and with clear skies forecasted we should see an upgrade from a Soft 5 come race day, so there should be no excuses for fancied runners throughout the card. The first at Gawler is set to jump at 12:30pm ACDT.

Best Bet: Gatsby’s Girl

Shayne Cahill saddles up his four-year-old mare Gatsby’s Girl, who has strung together consecutive runner-up performances in recent times and looks well placed to go one better on Wednesday. She was an eye-catcher for second at Strathalbyn on January 31, but favourite punters were left screwing up their tickets. In the small field of seven, Todd Pannell should be able to settle Gatsby’s Girl closer to the speed this time, and considering she has the best turn of foot in the race, she should prove too strong and fast for this lot over the concluding stages of the 1200m.

Best BetRace 1 – Gatsby’s Girl (#3) $1.55 with Sportsbet

Next Best: Pollyanna

Pollyanna had been a bit of a money muncher for us, but she rewarded our faith when saluting as a well-backed favourite on January 31 at Strathalbyn. She found plenty of favours in the run by just sitting off the leader’s heels and presenting at the top of the straight. She steps up to a BM58 but looks well placed to string together consecutive wins. With speed drawn underneath her, she may need a bit of luck to get across early on, but if she manages to get across with cover, she should prove too good in the third leg of the Gawler quaddie.

Next BestRace 8 – Pollyanna (#8) $8.50 with Sportsbet

Best Value: Olive Grove

We were with the Aimee Bush-trained Olive Grove at his last start over the Gawler 1100m when he ran a drum at big odds. He threw away his winning chances with a messy start but made up a considerable amount of ground along the rails to grind his way into third place. He has been racing in consistent enough form to suggest that he will threaten the finish here at a double-figure price.

Best ValueRace 9 – Olive Grove (#1) $10 with Sportsbet
