Gawler preview

What Gawler Races
Where Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club – Barnet Rd, Evanston SA 5116
When Saturday, July 9, 2022
First Race 11:32am ACST

We head to the Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club on Saturday afternoon for nine metropolitan races. The rail returns to the true position for a meeting at Gawler for the first time since April, and with the track rated a Soft 7, we anticipate it will be advantageous to be drawn low throughout the day. Racing is set to commence at 11:32am ACST.

Best Bet at Gawler: En Francais

The Jake Stephens-trained En Francais is the definition of consistency, but with one win and four minor placings from five starts, another win is well overdue. The four-year-old draws barrier one, which is a slight concern as she is a genuine backmarker. If apprentice Lachie Neindorf can get the Puissance De Lune mare off the fence approaching the home turn, she has the turn of foot to put this field away in a couple of strides. She won on debut at Gawler on April 25, 2021, and despite not tasting success since that day, we expect a second win to come for En Francais on Saturday.

Next Best at Gawler: Cashin’ Chex

There is little hiding the fact that we are big fans of the Ashton Downing-trained Cashin’ Chex. The five-year-old gelding has a win and three minor placings from four starts this campaign, and we are hoping he can add a second victory this time around. With Ben Price on board claiming 2kg, Cashin’ Chex goes around with just 55.5kg on his back – a 3.5kg weight swing from his last start. From barrier five, we anticipate Price will have him lobbed in the one-one throughout, and if afforded that luxury, the Mettre En Jeu gelding looks like the one they have to get past. The $4.40 available with online betting sites is worth loading into.

Best Value at Gawler: Aiguilette

The John Macmillan-trained Aiguillette has been racing in consistent form in recent times, and we anticipate he can bring up a second win from his last three starts. The six-year-old gelding sprinted with great success at Murray Bridge two starts back, sticking to the rails to win in impressive fashion. He then backed it up with a narrow defeat behind Sacred Palace at Morphettville, and if he replicates those last two efforts, he will be hard to beat this weekend. He has shown a liking for low draws, so barrier four should suit. If Todd Pannell can gain clear air in the home straight, Aiguilette has the turn of foot to win a race like this with ease. Online bookmakers are paying $7 for the win, and that looks a great price.
