Garibaldi wins the Goldmarket
Tony Gollan and Ryan Maloney have combined to take out the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Friday afternoon with enigmatic sprinter Garibaldi.
After opening as favourite with online bookmakers, the son of I Am Invincible drifted out to $6 before the jump, but even a betting drift couldn’t stop the talented horse today.
The six-year-old hadn’t won since December last year, but the stable has always had a big opinion of the horse, placing him in blacktype races over the Brisbane Winter Carnival.
It took every inch of the 1200m for Garibaldi to win, but he got his nose down right on the post to defeat a very brave Axe, while fellow Gollan galloper Ef Troop was unlucky back in third.

“He has just needed that luck – he’s been so unlucky in his last few starts,” stable representative Claire Bird said.
“Tony has always said ‘we know what this horse can do when he’s on song’, and today he showed exactly what he can do.
“He’s a really good racehorse.”
Ryan Maloney has only ridden the horse three times in the past, running second the first time he sat on him before winning back-to-back races in the spring of 2020, so he was pleased to get the job done aboard the horse in Friday’s feature.
Maloney said he was worried the run wouldn’t appear when outsider Gogol showed an unexpected turn of foot, but when the run did come, his mount hit the line strongly.
“He was probably a bit stiff the other day – had he got out a little bit earlier, it probably would have been a different scenario,” he said.
“The main objective – we wanted to get him to step, which he done.
“There wasn’t a great deal of pressure but I was able to stay behind the right one.
“I was a little bit concerned when Gogol didn’t drop off as quick as I would have liked, but he did at the right time and his class has shone through.”
