Garibaldi knocking on the door | The Follow Files

HorseBetting blackbook tips

A big day of racing right around the country was had on Saturday, with feature meetings at Eagle Farm, Flemington and Rosehill. The team at The Follow Files has identified a couple of horses to follow from that meeting as we go forward.

Eagle Farm | Track: Good 4 | Rail: +2m Entire Course

Race 5: Listed Lightning Handicap (1000m) | Time: 57.69

  • Horse to follow: GARIBALDI (2nd)

Before you bag us for adding GARIBALDI to our blackbook, hear us out. Yes, the Tony Gollan-trained five-year-old has been very hard to catch throughout his racing career, but the stable does have a big opinion of the horse, so he has often been placed out of his grade. The son of I Am Invincible returned on Saturday in the Listed Lightning Handicap over 1000m, where he was up against the fit and in-form Boomnova. Garibaldi has never really been a first-up horse, nor is 1000m his best trip, so to work home the way he did into second was encouraging.

When to bet: Garibaldi is the type of horse that is likely to be placed in some lower Listed races in the back end of the Brisbane Winter Carnival where he can be more than competitive. Watch for him next start over 1200m at Eagle Farm in a couple of weeks.

Flemington | Track: Soft 6 | Rail: +9m Entire Course

Race 2: 2YO Fillies Handicap (1100m) | Time: 1:04.01

  • Horse to follow: GHAANATI (1st)

GHAANATI was ultra-impressive when winning on debut on Saturday, clearing out from her rivals in the 1100m sprint to win by nearly four lengths. The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained two-year-old by Deep Impact had a lovely acceleration when asked to go by Damien Oliver, giving the impression that she could be a serious racehorse. While we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves on the back of a debut win in the off-season, her visually impressive performance was also backed up by the clock.

When to bet: Who knows where we will see Ghaanati next? The stable could push on this preparation; or, now that the maiden is out of the way and they have a bit of prizemoney in the pocket, connections could tip her out before a spring carnival campaign. A race like the Thousand Guineas (1600m) would be right in her wheelhouse.
