Gai Waterhouse and John Singleton inspired to Kiss and Make Up

Kiss and make upGAI Waterhouse and John Singleton have kissed and made up after their win at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The pair were involved in a public split over the training of champion mare More Joyous, but they have rekindled their relationship and have now unearthed a potential stakes performer with the aptly-named Kiss And Make Up.

The More Than Ready colt was a $150,000 Magic Millions purchase out of the group 1-winning mare Fashions Afield, which was owned by Singleton.

Kiss And Make Up showed good heart in winning the Tab.com.au Plate at Canterbury on Wednesday where it defeated the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Detective, which has now finished second in three career starts, and Gerald Ryan’s Star Of Monsoon.

The Waterhouse-trained colt was backed into favouritism from $5.50 to $3.50 at Sportsbet.com.au and Waterhouse’s racing manager Adrian Bott believes it can make the immediate rise to Saturday grade.

“It’s a lovely story for the stable and great to get a result for John Singleton,” Bott said.

“I think this horse can go straight to Saturday grade, Gai identified him very early as one of our most promising colts so certainly we’re looking at the Golden Slipper and maybe a race like the Todman could be something for him.

“He was tested today in a quality field and it was a good tough win.

“He’s always shown he is of that class so we’ll assess him after today and go from there.”

Kiss And Make Up has shortened significantly in Golden Slipper markets to $26 with Sportsbet.com.au.

In related news, it appears Gai Waterhouse’s racing empire is on the fritz after the stables were sold to Hong Kong interests.

The Randwick house is up for sale and her right-hand man resigned to take up his own trainers license, but Waterhouse remains unperturbed and insists she isn’t going anywhere, stating it was “business as usual”.

With foreman Mark Newnham leaving the stables, that made way for Adrian Bott whose father runs a stud for a group from Hong Kong, which left Newnham out in the open.

Newnham said Bott was “fairly much there as the successor, and stepping up into my role.

“In my eyes, it made me redundant,” he said.

“Gai tried to convince me otherwise, but it’s the best move all around that I go do my own thing now.”

Newnham also commented that Waterhouse told him she would be “training for a long time yet”.

“I’d hate for people to get the wrong impression from me that she’s looking to retire, because that’s certainly not the case,” Newnham said.

“It’s only the business side of things she wants to take out of her mind.”
