THE market suggested it was a two-horse affair and it proved that way in the $250,000 Inglis 2YO Classic at Randwick on Monday.

Bookmakers were forced shorten $2.20 favourite Sweet Deal after a steady stream of money came for the filly, but it was second favourite Frolic which came with a storming run to land the big pay day.

Frolic got the final say in the betting war when it stormed down the outside for Tommy Berry to secure its connections a nice return on their $100,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase.

The Michael Freedman-trained filly (+670 at Palmerbet.com.au) sat at the rear of the field before hitting top gear in the straight as it battled briefly with Sweet Deal before pulling away for a noteworthy win.

“First of all I’d like to thank Michael and his family, it’s very special to get one for them today,” Berry said.

“We spoke after Canterbury, she went keen in the winkers that day and I said ‘you might want to take them off, get her to switch off’.

“She’s got an electrifying turn-of-foot and we were always of the opinion that once she got to this race at Randwick, she’d be hard to beat.”

Berry left how the race would pan out to chance. His tactic was to ride Frolic back and hope there was speed in the race – Berry wasn’t disappointed as the speed was on with Sweet Deal sitting three wide on the pace.

“I said if they’re going quickly we can settle back we’ll win the race, if they go slow, it’s out of our hands,” Berry said.

“Just ride her the best way she’s suited and see how the race pans out. I won a group one doing that for him (Michael Freedman).”

Freedman was delighted with the result for his stable, which mainly consists of promising juveniles such as the unbeaten Teaspoon.

“It’s a big thrill. Basically the majority of what I’ve got at the moment, so it’s great to be getting in amongst a few of the better races,” Freedman said.

“I came here with a bit of confidence with her, I was worried about the gate, but Tommy is suited to those types of horses, where they can sit out the back and get an easy cart into it.”

Frolic produced a good sprint over the 1200m, which suggests it could rise in distance and handle it with no fears.

“She’s got a great turn-of-foot and they spaced the others – the first and second favourites,” Freedman said.

“We will see how she comes through today, hopefully we can press on a bit deeper in the autumn.

“I’ve always felt this filly will be even better when she gets to 1400m and perhaps even a mile.

“Hopefully she comes through today OK and we can have a look at some of those races over The Championships.”

Sweet Deal battled well for second after sitting three-wide throughout the race. Lets Get Nauti Girl did well to hold on for third after copping a check early in the race, but it was lengths behind the first two home.
