Freedman says Without A Fight best hope since Lucas Cranach
Trainer Sam Freedman, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony, has revealed he is likely to be flying solo at Flemington on Tuesday when their stable star Without A Fight runs in the Melbourne Cup.
Freedman said Anthony had indicated he would watch the Melbourne Cup at a friend’s winery in Merricks North on the Mornington Peninsula, despite Without A Fight being well in contention to win the family a sixth Melbourne Cup.
The Freedman family have a remarkable history in the Melbourne Cup, with their last victory being with Makybe Diva, when she won the third of her cups in 2005.
“I think you’ll find him at a little winery in Merricks North owned by family friends; he watched the Caulfield Cup there. I spoke to him this morning about it, and he said, ‘Why would I watch it anywhere else?’ So I don’t think he will be trackside,” Sam Freedman said.
Without A Fight is a $6 chance with horse betting sites and looms as the Freedman’s best hope since Lucas Cranach finished third in the 2011 Melbourne Cup.
“This feels like the best chance we’ve had, and the family probably hasn’t had a real good chance, maybe since Lucas Cranach, who ran a really good race,” Freedman said.
