Free group 1 tips for the Morphettville Saturday races, May 7

Morphettville
MORPHETTVILLE is the only place to be in Adelaide this Saturday with a bumper eight-race card.

Traditionally known as ladies’ day, Schweppes Oaks Day features two group 1 races – the Australasian Oaks and South Australian Derby – with more than $1 million in prizemoney on offer.

The Andrew Noblet-trained Silent Sedition is the $4.80 favourite for the Schweppes Oaks, while Ciaron Maher’s Petits Filous heads a monster 23-horse field in the Derby, sitting at $6 with Sportsbet.com.au.

The first race of the day is the Quayclean Handicap where Darren Weir’s Killarney Kid will need to get the punters off to a winning note.

Race 1 – Quayclean Handicap (2000m) – 12.35pm

Killarney Kid is enjoying a rich vein of form with three wins on the trot, including an impressive victory at Morphettville just two weeks ago. The punters have got around the Darren Weir and Brad Rawiller combination, backing the favourite in from $2.40 into $1.60.

The big threat in the field is the Will Clarken-trained Tidy Prophet, which is in the second run back from a spell. Running at 3kg lighter than the favourite with Craig Williams on board, the mare is expected to enjoy the 2000-metre journey and provides good value at $4.40.

Scratchings for other fancies Golden Mane and Mr Journeyman could turn this into a match-race.

Race 1 tip: Killarney Kid to win at $1.60 @ Sportsbet.com.au

Race 2 – Mac Drink Driving? Grow Up (1600m) – 1.10pm

The bookmaker’s favourite Zebrinz has improved in each run since returning from a spell earlier this year. The Leon and Troy Corstens-trained runner ran a solid fourth in better company at the same distance at Caulfield and at $3, may not get a better opportunity to win with Chris Parnham on its back.

The x-factor of the race is Kingdoms, which is coming back from a spell. The Michael Hickmott-trained colt performs well when fresh, is the top weight and has been backed in from $6 to $5 at Sportsbet.com.au.

There’s been some interest around Excites Zelady and Tonopah – on the third and fourth lines of betting – both should enjoy the distance, but recent form against quality company is a concern.

Race 2 tip: Kingdoms to win at $5

Race 3 – Seven News Queen Adelaide Stakes (1050m) – 1.50pm

The first horse to catch the eye in this field is our smokey in the field, Exilia Miss. Trained by Leon and Troy Corstens, the filly flew from the back of the field at Bendigo in its first run back from a spell and may have what it takes to worry this field.

The punters favourite is the red-hot Tris. Trained in partnership by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, the filly has winning form at Morphettville, enjoying group 3 success in the Breeders Stakes just three weeks ago. Carrying just 55.5kg, it’ll be tough to look past.

Race 3 tip: Exilia Miss each way

Race 4 – Dc McKay Stakes (1100m) – 2.30pm

The betting market in the Dc McKay Stakes is an interesting one.

The punter’s favourite Super One, paying $3.70 at Sportsbet.com.au, is perhaps the most gifted runner in the field and strong when returning from a spell.

The John Hickmott-trained Scratchy Lass represents the best value in the field. Coming off two victories in admittedly easier-fields, the mare is a horse that wills itself to victories and responds when challenged.

The punters have come for Thermal Current, which has given strong showings in quality races recently. Dropping 2kg in weight for this race with Damian Lane on board will get it every chance.

Race 4 tip: Scratchy Lass to place, paying $3.40 at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 5 – Ubet Euclase Stakes (1200m) – 3.10pm

There’s a very good reason the Phillip Stokes-trained Miss Gunpowder will start as favourite in the Ubet Euclase Stakes – it has the ability, likes the track and should be coming in to its absolute best form this Saturday. The filly finished a close second in its last run at Morphettville, will be better suited to 1200 metres and will also drop 2.5kg in weight.

Forget about everyone else in the field, this is our bet of the day.

Race 5 tip: Miss Gunpowder to win, paying $3.80 at Crownbet.com.au

Race 6 – Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) – 3.50pm

With 20 runners in the field, this is no easy race to pick.

Coming out of barrier 7, the $4.80 favourite Silent Sedition has been drawn beautifully and is the form runner in the field. After getting the perfect run at the Auraria Stakes two weeks ago, it finished strongly and won plenty of admirers.

The price on Abbey Marie ($5 @ WilliamHill.com.au) is a concern. Yes, it has won its only two races and looked very impressive in doing so, but this is a big step up in both class and distance. We’d recommend keeping a close eye on market and wait for better odds before the jump.

The Anthony Cummings-trained Believe has looked good since returning from a little spell and likes this distance – it finished third to Sofia Rose in the ATC Oaks just last month and at $8 provides good each-way value.

Throw a blanket over the rest – we like Asinara and First Impressions as good place bets and Lopartega could be a very good smokey bet at $21.

Race 6 tip: Silent Sedition to win, Lopartega to place

Race 7 – R. Sangster Stakes (1200m) – 4.30pm

In what is an enormous, 23-horse field, Griante is the one who stands out to us. Currently paying $7 with Sportsbet.com.au, the David Brideoake-trained Mare recorded a terrific group 1 win just two starts back. With the experience Craig Williams on board, it is nicely drawn and has beaten much more competitive company.

Tuscan Sling is an interesting proposition. At $15 it provides great value, but can only really be a threat if it brings its best form, which it has struggled to find in its last two runs. With Brad Rawiller on board, we believe the big occasion may bring out the best.

The money has come for Petits Filous, which could start the race as the favourite. Currently sitting at $6, Ciaron Maher’s pride and joy will need to improve and should enjoy running back around anti clock-wise.

Precious Gem is another to keep an eye on – it brings good form into the race, has Jake Noonan on board and at $26 to win, is our best smokey and place bet.

Race 7 tip: Griante to win at $7 with Crownbet.com.au

Race 8 – Hughes Queen of the South Stakes (1600m) – 5.10pm

All eyes will be on Chris Waller’s best hope for the day, French Emotion. With four wins and two second placings in its last six races, its form is unquestionable and despite a step up in class, we’re certain that the 1600 metre run should suit it perfectly. With Craig Williams on board, we think the $4 at WilliamHill.com.au is value.

Metaphorical has been consistent and is due for a big breakthrough performance. Another in the Dave Hayes and Tom Dabernig partnership stable, it is well-drawn in barrier 14 and has returned well from a spell over the last two months.

Darren Weir stable mates Felicienne ($15) and Atlantis Dream ($13) have less-than-ideal barrier draws to contend with, but with a clean run are more than capable of finishing strongly.

Race 8 tip: Metaphorical to win $4.40 with Sportsbet.com.au
