Frankie Dettori Wins the 2023 Ascot Gold Cup aboard Courage Mon Ami

Frankie Dettori achieved a remarkable triumph in his final Gold Cup ride, as the aptly-named Courage Mon Ami displayed immense determination to defeat Coltrane in a thrilling battle during the last section of the prestigious Royal Ascot race.

This victory marked Dettori’s ninth Gold Cup win, a remarkable feat for the Italian jockey, who will retire from racing at the end of this year.

Courage Mon Ami, trained by John and Thady Gosden, had only participated in three races prior to this event, all of which resulted in victories.

Despite starting as a +1400 underdog with thoroughbred betting sites , Courage Mon Ami showcased his potential over the longer distance by positioning himself towards the rear of the pack, while Subjectivist, the winner from two years ago, took the lead.

Frankie Dettori displayed his calculated risk-taking by patiently waiting along the rail, skillfully maneuvering past exhausted horses and then shifting to the outside of Coltrane’s position.

The four-year-old offspring of Frankel demonstrated unwavering strength, ultimately surpassing the 11-4 favorite ridden by Oisin Murphy. Subjectivist also exhibited commendable resilience, securing a valiant third place.

“I can hardly believe it! I thought it would be too challenging, given the handicaps, but I experienced a flawless race,” expressed a joyous Dettori, who received an overwhelming reception upon his return and even shared a congratulatory kiss with the Queen during the award ceremony.
