This is a race in three if ever we have seen one. Just nine runners make up the final field in this year’s Frank Packer Plate, including Randwick Guineas winner Lion’s Roar. Outsiders in the field Silent Thunder and Santadeal will likely go forward, while Khoekhoe, Lion’s Roar and Real Peace won’t be too far away. Lion’s Roar tops the market at $2.10, ahead of Khoekhoe at $3.50 and High Supremacy at $3.70.
Lion’s Roar and Khoekhoe will be extremely hard to beat given they are the class runners in this field. They both have come through the Australian Derby finishing third and fifth respectively and have won between them $1.2M prize-money — more than the rest of the field combined. The pair have drawn in the outside half of the field, so we can expect to see them settle two or three pairs back on the outside, with Lion’s Roar and Brenton Avdulla likely to be stalking Craig Williams and Khoekhoe. The two class three-year-olds are only two weeks between runs and drop back from 2400m to 2000m, so they could potentially be too dour over the 2000m and have a bit of a sprint taken out of them. As such, we are going to make a case for the other runner in the betting, High Supremacy.
The Richard & Michael Freedman gelding gets James McDonald in the saddle again after being unlucky behind Kiku in the Carbine Club a fortnight ago over a mile. The son of Savabeel has never been tested beyond 1600m, but he looks to be crying out for the mile and a quarter which he will get on Saturday. Once he got out into clear galloping room in his most recent start, he finished off with the best final 200m sectional of the race to suggest he will be strong at the end of 2000m. Drawn gate two, McDonald will have plenty of options with this lightly raced gelding and can be winning aboard him in this.
