Follow Files: Third time lucky for Queensland filly
Last Saturday, we had winter racing from every state across Australia, and we have found three up-and-coming two-year-olds that we will be following after performing very well on the weekend.
Eagle Farm
Race 1: 2YO Handicap (1200m) | Time: 1:12.44
- Horse to follow: Tango Fever (1st)
The opening race of the day at Eagle Farm featured Tango Fever from the Robert Heathcote yard, having her first start for her new trainer. After settling behind the leaders, Martin Harley released the brakes on the two-year-old filly at the 300m mark and she ran home stylishly to break her maiden by just over two lengths – recording one of the better wins of the day. This daughter of More Than Ready has now broken her maiden at her third start, and she should be able to go on with it, given the ease of her victory.
When to bet: After getting this win first-up, we expect this filly to stay in work and push onto another two-year-old race over a similar distance in Queensland. There is a Two-Year-Old Handicap over 1400m at Eagle Farm on July 29 that should suit Tango Fever down to the ground.
Flemington
Race 1: 2YO Handicap (1000m) | Time: 0:57.47
- Horse to follow: Archo Nacho (2nd)
Archo Nacho went to town last Saturday after he broke his maiden on debut at Geelong; however, he didn’t get the breaks when he needed them and he flew home for second behind Exploring down the straight at Flemington over 1000m. After jumping from barrier one, Daniel Stackhouse had to wait for gaps to appear between horses, but they didn’t appear until the 200m mark, when the winner had already sprinted clear to put up a winning margin on this two-year-old gelding.
When to bet: Post-race Matt Laurie said that he has a high opinion of this horse and that he is very smart. With two weekends left in his two-year-old season, a race like the Super Vobis Two-Year-Old Colts and Geldings Handicap over 1000m at Moonee Valley could be his last run for this preparation.
Randwick
Race 1: 2YO Handicap (1400m) | Time: 1:23.24
- Horse to follow: Private Legacy (2nd)
The opening race of the day at Randwick was won by The Little Pumper who raced led from start to finish and didn’t give his rivals any chance. However, the best of the beaten brigade had to be the fast-finishing Gregory Hickman-trained Private Legacy. The two-year-old filly let down with a very good turn of foot to run home into second place, indicating that she could be looking for 1600m at her next start, which may come in country grade after failing to break her maiden in three metropolitan starts.
When to bet: With the two-year-old season coming to an end, we could see Hickman take this filly out to the country and attempt to break her maiden before she turns three on August 1. If Private Legacy steps out in a race over 1400m or 1600m against her own age group, we will be backing her.
