Flemington racing tips & best bets – Saturday, 23 May 2020

Flemington Racecourse

We are back racing at Flemington on Saturday with nine runs on the card. The first kicks off at 11:40am AEST for the Benchmark 84 stayers, with the three-year-olds going around in the last race of the day at 4:38pm. The track was rated a Heavy 9 on Friday morning and we expect it to stay around that for Saturday. The rail goes out 5m for the entire circumference of the track after last week’s racing.

Saturday betting tips for Flemington

Best Bet
Race 7 – Duke Of Plumpton @ $3.90 Sportsbet

You won’t find a better trainer/jockey combination anywhere in the country at the moment than Paddy Payne and Billy Egan. That’s what punters are gifted with in the form of Duke Of Plumpton in Race 7. The ex-Kiwi galloper won its Australian debut by three lengths before finishing strongly into second behind Shot Of Irish at Sandown on a day where you had to lead to be any chance. Duke Of Plumpton got back just worse than midfield and was one of the only horses to make ground down the centre of the track. He will strip fitted third up and the rain-affected Flemington track will suit him. From gate two, Egan should find himself in a relatively handy position to finish strongly.

Next Best
Race 1 – Shepard @ $4 Bet365

Peter Moody is back and flying with two winners and a second from three starters since his return a fortnight ago. The first of those victories was with Shepard, which we think can make it back-to-back wins for Moods. The Sea The Moon gelding was a dominant winner last start at Ballarat on a Heavy 8 track over 2000m, getting up by nearly three lengths. That form has since been franked, with runner-up Arty Lucas winning by a similar margin on Wednesday. Luke Nolen will hope to slot in midfield from the outside barrier and use the gelding’s stunning turn of foot to land in the winner’s stall again. The rise in trip to 2500m is perfect and the wet track form ticks all the boxes for us.

Best Value
Race 9 – Master Montaro @ $10 Sportsbet

We have identified two horses that present each-way chances in the last of the day. Master Montaro is our main play, but he is second emergency and thus not guaranteed a start. He was an eye-catching winner on debut coming from near last and weaving his way through the field to win by 3.5 lengths. The Toronado gelding was sold to Hong Kong straight away but has been transferred from Richard Laming to the Lindsay Park operation. If he gets a start, we think he goes very close to winning at a double-figure quote.

Next Best Value
Race 9 – Mockery @ $35 Sportsbet

Should Master Montaro not gain a start, we are happy to have a small each-way bet on Mocking at $30s. John McArdle’s 3yo filly was outstanding winning at Sandown last start on a Heavy 9 where she lead from barrier to box, albeit on a leaders’ track. She is a Flemington straight-track winner in the past and will put herself in the race under Jess Eaton, who will claim 2kg. While this is much tougher company than Mockery has been racing in, she is over the odds in our opinion.
