The Maccas Run Horse Betting Preview
In a race that has produced plenty of impressive stayers on Melbourne Cup day in years gone past, a field of 15 was accepted when fields were released for the BM96 over 2800 metres for the prize pool of $135,000.
The Maccas Run is set to jump at 12:40pm AEDT. (Quite ironic if you ask us)

#1 Djukon (2)
It was a respectable return from a spell for the Chris Waller trained gelding who was able to run into the minor money in the listed City Tatts Cup at Randwick. He’s mapped to settle towards the back of the field, but he will stay all day and will be chipping away at the lead from the 600 metre mark onwards. With a genuine tempo expected, he should get the race run the way he wants it to and will be fighting out the finish at the end of 2800 metres.
#2 Knights Order (8)
The standard Waterhouse and Bott staying tactics look ideal for this gelding. He was an impressive winner in the aforementioned City Tatts Cup at Randwick a week ago, after leading from the 1600 metre mark onwards and giving nothing else a chance of running him down, but he does go up significantly in the weights here when getting an extra eight and a half kilograms on his back.
#3 Sweet Thomas (12)
Matthew Smith will be looking for his 9YO gelding to bounce back after a disappointing showing in the Newcastle Gold Cup six weeks ago where he failed to beat a runner home and was beaten by over 20 lengths. Unlike the top weight who he maps to settle alongside with, he doesn’t have the turn of foot to play a crucial role in the event and looks to be well tested here in an easier race than his last start.
#4 Vin De Dance (1)
The ever reliable duo of Simon Wilde and Dean Yendall will look to overturn the former kiwi gallopers poor form so far this campaign. He was well held in his last start in the Hamilton Cup when drifting late in the market. He has three wins from 26 career starts, but he did win the NZ Derby back in 2018, so we know he can stay at his best, but this just seems too much for him at this stage of his career.
#5 Naval Warfare (4)
The Anthony Freedman trained 7YO gelding was well beaten early on in the City Tatts Cup at Randwick last weekend and will need to overturn a near six length defeat to Knights Order if he wants to be getting his first win in almost two years. Earlier in the year he ran within three lengths to King Of Leogrance here who goes around in the Melbourne Cup, but has been a fair way off that form this campaign.
#6 Midterm (5)
Mick Cerchi and Patrick Moloney will team up with this 8YO gelding who is looking to break a run of outs which has lasted nearly a whole year since his last win. He was one of the first beaten in the Bendigo Cup last Wednesday, but was a rank outsider in that field and only managed to beat four home. He is yet to run into the placings at four attempts at Flemington and looks well tested here.
#7 Sin To Win (15)
In a race full of runners struggling with horrific form recently, it seems strange to suggest backing a horse who has not won in over two and a half years. He did however go within a nose of breaking that streak at his last start here in July and has run into the money on ten occasions at Flemington in the past. He needs to overcome a three length defeat to the race favourite Yonkers, but drops three and a half kilograms off that run.
#8 Yonkers (9)
After mixed results to begin his campaign up in Sydney, Chris Waller sent this 5YO gelding down to Caulfield for Blue Sapphire Stakes day and proved too strong in the concluding stages after a nice run in transit. He gets a race here which is no harder than the one he encountered at Caulfield and only goes up half a kilogram from that run. The extra 400 metres looks like it will not be an issue, and will take a power of holding out.
#9 Master Shuhood (13)
The stablemate to the favourite chased him home last start at Caulfield to only be beaten by two and a half lengths and actually beat home our top selection Sin To Win in the process. He did however get the run of the race just off the leaders heels but couldn’t stay out the trip as well as his rivals, and that looks to be the query now that he gets an extra 400 metres.
#10 Yulong Rising (14)
Having chased home the likes of Irish Flame and Saracen Knight in recent efforts, and was able to pinch third last time out but was still well beaten in the process. He drops significantly in the weights down to 56kgs here from 61.5kgs, but with the wide barrier he looks to be well tested here on Cup day.
#11 Eureka Street (7)
Another runner who came through the Caulfield race that Yonkers took out three weeks ago and only went down by two lengths on the line. He’s a horse that will settle up on speed and from barrier seven Glen Boss may opt to take up the running with the Jason Warren trained 7YO gelding. He’s a previous Flemington winner, but that victory is the only time he has run into the placings at the track.
#12 Jack Regan (10)
The Busuttin and Young have opted for their 6YO gelding to back up off a six day break from the Bendigo Cup where he finished worse than midfield and was hardly in the race throughout. In all of his starts this campaign he has finished worse than midfield and has barely looked like beating one home. It’s a hard no for us here.
#13 Monmouth (11)
Allison Bennett and Ben Allen will look to go one better than what they did with this 6YO gelding in the Moe Cup three weeks ago, where he ran into one better, but was able to account for a couple of handy gallopers in the meantime. From barrier 11 Ben Allen will look to get him in the moving line with cover as he is a horse who prefers to run just off the speed and if he can replicate that Moe Cup form and his win prior to that at The Valley he will be incredibly hard to hold out at big odds.
#14 Alienated (3)
Scratched.
#15 Blandford Lad (6)
Peter Gelagotis and Jason Maskiell team up with this ever consistent 5YO who looks to be one of the value bets of the race considering he just missed in a driving finish at Geelong. He was held up at a crucial point in the home straight in that event and was part of the reason he didn’t get the job done. From barrier six he maps to settle midfield in the running and with a bit of luck he could prove a genuine knockout hope in what looks a race with not many chances.
