Flemington Gilgai Stakes Horse Betting Preview & Tips

The Group 2 Gilgai Stakes has attracted a high quality field for the 1200m affair at Flemington down the the “straight six” on Saturday 3rd October 2020.

TAB Everest contenders, Tofane and Santa Ana Lane currently sit at the top of the market, ahead of Zoutori who is the only other runner in single figures. While it is a 1200m dash down the straight, there doesn’t look to be much speed outside of Dollar For Dollar. I Am Someone and Kemalpasa will be handy, while Tofane, Zoutori and Santa Ana Lane will settle in the back half.

We are going to side with last start Group 1 placegetter in Dollar For Dollar. He made it might hard for Behemoth to run him down and we think he will be suited dropping back to 1200m. Drawn in the middle of the line, Luke Currie will roll forward and be right there on the speed and make it hard to be run past. He has only missed the place once over 1200m and that did come at this track and distance against a number of his opponents here, but he should be much fitter for the run and gets less pressure in this race to be formidable at an each way price.

Santa Ana Lane is clearly the class horse of the field given he has won a Sir Rupert Clarke, Goodwood, Stradbroke, VRC Sprint and a TJ Smith, but he can be hard to catch. After being given a slot in The Everest during the week, we expect Anthony Freedman to have him ready to go first up, considering there is no time to waste before his grand final in a fortnight. He is a Group 1 winner at this track and trip and goes reasonably well fresh. Barrier 3 will see Mark Zahra settle at the tail of the field and be finishing strongly. If the cream rises to the top like we expect, he will be right in the finish.

One horse who looks massive overs is actually the outsider of the field in Kemalpasa. The Richard and Chantelle Jolly trained five-year-old gelding was a winner down the straight on Derby Day last year, beating home Zoutori on that occasion. First up this campaign, he was only beaten 3L by Behemoth at Morphettville, and 1.5L by Dalasan which is superb form here. He did fail last start in a race that was set up for the eventual winner to lead all of the way. Drawn out in gate 10, Craig Williams can be positive and handy to the speed to give the Magnus gelding every chance of maintaining his undefeated record over the straight six course.
