Global Tote at Topbetta

Race 1 – VRC Members Pavilion Handicap (1000m)

Inglis 2YO winner Azazel returns to the track after a break during the winter. The Tony McEvoy-trained colt finished fourth behind Property in the Blue Diamond Prelude when it last run and that form should stack up well in this grade. The inside draw isn’t a great position to be in down the Flemington straight, but it has good pace and could go forward and lead them a merry chase.

Wait For No One didn’t quite show up at its last few starts, but it looked above average prior to that. The Lindsay Park-trained three-year-old ran third in the Maribyrnong Plate last November before running seventh in the Blue Diamond behind Catchy. It showed plenty of pace earlier on in its preparation and it has been well-backed at $3.90 to run up to its ability here.

Race 1 tip: Azazel to win ($4) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 2 – New Season Handicap (1700m)

Hell Or Highwater looks ready to win after a solid effort behind Dulverton last start. The Lindsay Park-trained five-year-old is fitter for four runs this preparation and rising up to this distance looks ideal now. It has been nicely backed to turn the tables on Dulverton at $5 after touching $5.50.

Dulverton is in career-best form having won its last two in impressive fashion. The daughter of Commands scored by just under a length at Sandown two back before repeating that effort on this track last start. It gets the inside draw which isn’t great as it likes to have room to move, but it gets 3kg off its back and only needs a good ride to win again.

Race 2 tip: Dulverton to win ($3.40) at Topbetta.com.au

Race 3 – Winter Lodge Handicap (1000m)

Madeenaty was competitive against some quality juveniles last preparation and it should kick off its new campaign with a top effort. The Hayes/Dabernig-trained three-year-old won on debut on this track before finishing third behind Houtzen in the Magic Millions. It showed nothing in the Golden Slipper before spelling, but the heavy track didn’t suit and it will be awfully tough to beat off the inside draw on Saturday. It opened at $3.50 and has been backed into $3.20 which is a good price.

Chateau Griffo hasn’t been seen since running third in the Blue Diamond Preview behind Limestone and there is good tote support. The Robbie Griffiths-trained daughter of Sebring showed plenty of ability on that occasion as a $101 chance, but was that a flash in the pan type of performance? Bookies opened it up as the $3.10 favourite, but it hasn’t attracted much interest.

Race 3 tip: Madeenaty to win ($3.20) at Topbetta.com.au

Race 4 – The Nursery Handicap (2000m)

Aloft resumes for Robert Hickmott with the Melbourne Cup in sights. The imported son of Galileo showed good ability last preparation when winning at Flemington before running second behind Big Duke in the Chairman’s at Randwick. That form will stack up this spring and it typically shows good fresh in a fresh state. There has been solid betting support throughout the week and it should be in the thick of the finish.

Bondi Beach has switched stables for another tilt at the Melbourne Cup it should thrive in Australia with more racing under its belt. The former Irish gelding has won twice from three fresh up starts and it has enough ability to run well at this distance. Punters should be taking pointers from this run and it has attracted attention at $6.50.

Race 4 tip: Aloft to place ($1.85) at CrownBet.com.au

Race 5 – The Stayers Lounge Handicap (1200m)

Nikitas has thrived under Darren Weir and its win over Revolving Door last start had plenty of merit. The former Queenslander goes well at this distance and there are no superstars in this field, so it can take advantage again. It has a good draw and is weighted perfectly at 54.5kg. Current second favourite at $3.80.

Kirani went close on this track last month and it’s another which gets in well on the weights. The Pat Hyland-trained gelding has yet to win from nine starts at Flemington, but it has won five times at this distance and it indicated last start that it’s nearing a win. Value runner at $7.50.

Race 5 tip: Nikitas to win ($3.80) at Ladbrokes.com.au

Race 6 – 1 Oliver Street Plate (2500m)

Former Kiwi runner Chequered Flag has adjusted to Australian life rather easily by winning its last two starts by big margins. The Weir-trained gelding won over the hurdles by 10 lengths two starts back before winning over 2400m at Sandown by 4.75 lengths last start. It takes a handy runner to space its rivals out like that and punters are getting some solid value at $5.

Yogi has been well-favoured at $3.70 following its good showing at Sandown last start where it was making good ground late. The five-year-old got a touch too far back with Craig Williams in the saddle, but it did well to make up the ground. John Allen takes over the riding for this and it should be tough to beat over this distance.

Race 6 tip: Yogi to win ($3.70) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 7 – Jockey Celebration Day Plate (1600m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1137175_07]

Rebellious Lord has been one of the best backed runners of the day. The Mark O’Donnell-trained gelding opened at $4.40 and has come tumbling into $3.20 following its good showing at Flemington last start. The son of Rebel Raider didn’t have much luck and flashed home late behind Portman, which is great form considering it drops right down in grade for this. Punters have jumped on early and it will likely start even shorter.

Andrea Mantegna is an imported runner for Darren Weir which scored well at Geelong in its Australian debut. The former French runner was strong to the line which is a good sign and despite having to carry a big weight for this, it looks to have above average ability. $7.50 with bookmakers.

Race 7 tip: Rebellious Lord to win ($3.20) at Topbetta.com.au

Race 8 – John And Denise Cobcroft Handicap (1600m)

It has been a long time between drinks for Moonovermanhattan, but it has attracted support at double figure odds. The Weir-trained six-year-old has won over $320,000 from only two wins, but after opening at $17 it has been well-backed into $13. That’s a significant move and it suggests that it has been working well at home.

Show A Star has been knocking on the door this entire campaign and the win could come here. The Archie Alexander-trained six-year-old is a four-time winner at this distance and it performs well at this track with two starts for one win and one placing. It gets in well on the weights at 54kg with Craig Newitt in the saddle.

Race 8 tip: Show A Star to win ($5) at CrownBet.com.au

Race 9 – The Rails Handicap (1400m)

Revolving Door didn’t have much luck last start at Caulfield after being trapped wide throughout, but it still fought on well for second. The Clinton McDonald-trained four-year-old has been in good form this campaign after running last in the Caulfield Guineas last in October, 2016. It has yet to win at this distance in five attempts, but it could be saved up for one last run at them. Currently on the second line of betting at $3.80.

Portman is the $3.40 favourite following another a classy win at Flemington last start. Danny O’Brien-trained gelding is a model of consistency and it has never finished out of the placings in six starts on this track. It has drawn favourably in barrier four and the 1.5kg claim from Ben Thompson should see it fighting out the finish.

Race 9 tip: Portman to win ($3.40) at Topbetta.com.au

Race 10 – The Domain Handicap (2000m)

Spanish Reef has been tough this campaign in winning its last two starts. The Ken Keys-trained mare pulled out all the stops on this track last start when beating Ruby Sea by just under a length. The four-year-old looks to have above average potential and it just needs to find a good spot in the field from barrier nine. It opened at $3.70 and has drifted out a touch to $4.

Poetic Ray is also a winner of its last two, but they have come at easier levels. The Mitchell Freeman-trained four-year-old has relished the wet tracks and it should improve throughout its campaign and it steps up over more ground. The 2000m is ideal and there has been solid support at $8.50.

Race 10 tip: Spanish Reef to win ($4) at Bet365.com
