Patrick Payne and Michael Dee will be hoping they can continue the undefeated start to Squid Game’s career with another win here on Saturday. The three-year-old son of Shooting To Win managed to overcome some mid-race issues and salute in fine style on debut at Sandown Lakeside on November 24. Having shown signs of racing keen early on, Dee had to take the bay gelding to the front of the field and have him settled outside the leader. Once he got there, he settled nicely and managed to kick clear in the home straight to win in dominant fashion over 1200m. He stays at the sprint trip, and despite this being his first look down the Flemington straight, we expect him to run a bold race up on speed. In the small field of six, expect Squid Game to give a kick inside the final 200m and prove too hard to run down.
Next Best at Flemington – Yulong Command
Anthony & Sam Freedman send Yulong Command to the Flemington 1000m following a third-place finish behind Enthaar in the Listed Doveton Stakes. It took breaking a track record for Enthaar to beat Yulong Command, and that kind of form suggests this four-year-old chestnut will take some catching. He was a smart winner at the Moonee Valley 955m on October 22 two starts back, where he settled up on speed and managed to hit the line strongly. Matthew Cartwright, who claims 2kg, will look to have him settled close to the speed, if not lead the field up. With the claim and decent form lines, we expect Yulong Command to send us home a winner.
Best Value at Flemington – Gentleman Roy
The Ben & JD Hayes-trained Gentleman Roy managed to score in fine style first-up at Geelong on December 1, and we think he can go on with it at metropolitan level. The five-year-old son of So You Think box seated on that day and used the economic run in transit to his advantage, powering over the top of the leaders. From barrier 12, we expect Luke Nolen to roll forward and have him settled outside the leader or in the one-one. He has a nice turn of foot under his bonnet, and as long as he does not get trapped wide from the sticky barrier, we anticipate he will be too hard to hold out at a nice price.
