Fierce Impact gives Smith Randwick double

Trainer Mathew Smith has posted a Randwick double with Touch Of Mink and Fierce Impact.

Former English-trained Japanese-bred Fierce Impact seems to have found his niche in Australia with trainer Matthew Smith who has celebrated a double at Randwick.

The Smith-trained Touch Of Mink won early on Saturday’s program with Fierce Impact bringing an end to proceedings with his victory in the Anthony Diprose Memorial (1400m).

A $7 chance after a close-up third at his first Australian start, Fierce Impact came laong the inside under Andrew Adkins to beat Reiby Rampart ($16) by a half neck.

Fierce Impact was placed in a Listed race in England and was on a Derby path but Smith believes he will be a sprinter-miler in Australia.

“I’m not sure how far we will go into the winter,” Smith said.

“We wanted to see where he was up to against our horses and I think there might be some spring races for him.

‘It’s great to have a horse of his calibre and breeding in the stable and I’m grateful to Avo (Damirdjian) from Tried and True Bloodstock who sourced him for us.”

Fierce Impact is by Japanese champion Deep Impact out of Group winner Keiai Gerbera and cost $200,000.
