2020 Festival Stakes betting preview
A full field of 16 has been assembled for the Group 3 Festival Stakes, which is the feature race at Rosehill on Saturday. It is a wide-open betting affair, with Phaistos holding favouritism from Outrageous, Through The Cracks and Ranier. It’ll be a fast-run 1500m race, with Irithea, Mushaireb and Miss Siska all likely to search for the lead.
Outrageous was a strong Flemington winner on Melbourne Cup Day over 1400m on a dry track, and there is no reason why he can’t do it again here. He settled in the box seat on that occasion, and he is likely to get a similar run in transit from barrier nine on Saturday under Tommy Berry. He drops 3kg from that run, which will make him hard to beat in this.
Ranier is the class of the field and looks hard to beat despite running below par in The Hunter a fortnight ago. His best racing is at Rosehill (6:3-0-2) and he prefers a dry track, so the conditions should suit. Hugh Bowman has never missed a place aboard the son of Lonhro, winning four times aboard the five-year-old and placing another four times, so the pairing is a big plus. Ranier needs to bring his A-game to win this, but his best is well and truly good enough.
Phaistos will take plenty of beating but looks to be a vulnerable favourite, so we expect to see him drift on the day. The son of Helmet is unbeaten at the Rosehill 1500m course, but he comes off a tough Heavy 10 run in the Sale Cup four weeks ago. That meeting has seen a number of classy gallopers find issues at their next starts, including Meteorite and Shelby Cobra. In saying that, he has trialled well since and maps well from barrier two under Brenton Avdulla. It’s been nearly eight months since his last win, but his best racing will see him competitive.
