Emirates target for Humidor

Champion Victorian trainer Darren Weir will saddle six of the 16 runners in Saturday’s Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m), including New Zealand-owned Group 1 winner Humidor.

Formerly prepared by Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard in New Zealand, Humidor continued his upward progression when transferred to Weir in early 2017.

Bred and raced by Jomara Bloodstock, the company of Auckland-based John and Mark Carter and their sister, Rachael, Humidor has tasted elite level success at Flemington in both the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) and Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

It is that venue that Weir believes Humidor will be most effective this campaign and while describing Humidor as being in great shape, he believes the six-year-old gelding, like the majority of his six runners, will improve vastly for the run on Saturday.

“They’re all in great shape to be kicking off, but we’re looking to the future,” Weir said.

The Group 1 A$2 million Emirates Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on November 10 is the prime target for Humidor this preparation.

“I think that’s a nice race for him, so we’ll head towards that,” he said. “He’ll run in the Memsie and the Makybe Diva and he loves Flemington, so I’m sure he’ll run well in that race again.” Weir also said the Group 1 A$5 million Cox Plate (2040m) would be on the agenda for Humidor, a race in which he ran the champion mare Winx to half a length last year.

“He ran so well last year, so there’s no reason not to go again,” he said. “It’s terrific prize money, so hopefully he can get a bit of it.”
