Promising two-year-old Cutadeel has suffered a serious setback and will not race again this season.

The gelding became the first winner for his sire, multiple Group One winner Dundeel, when beating his stablemate Thomas Aquinas on debut at Tauranga last month.

“He cracked his pelvis in his next gallop after he won at Tauranga,” co-trainer Murray Baker said. “He was to race at New Plymouth last Saturday, but instead he’ll be out for six months.

“Hopefully he’ll come back all right with time.”

Thomas Aquinas, a son of Jakkalberry, went on from that debut second to finish a creditable sixth in the Listed Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) at Ellerslie and is likely to run next in the Group 3 Reid & Harrison Slipper (1200m) at Matamata later this month.

“He’s not really a two-year-old and he did well to finish as close as he did in the Karaka Million,” Baker said. “He did things wrong in his first start.”
