HorseBetting’s Queensland form analyst has previewed the eight-race card at Doomben on Wednesday, January 12 and brings you his best bets, value bet and quaddie numbers. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is out 8.5m for the entire course. The first race of the afternoon is set to jump at 1:34pm AEST.

Doomben Best Bet – A Call From Heaven

In the second race of the afternoon, Queensland’s premiership-leading trainer, Tony Gollan, will saddle up first starter, A Call From Heaven. The three-year-old filly by Divine Prophet has had the benefit of three trials where she has won two of them and placed fourth in the other. In her first trial on August 31st, the filly led the field and was able to lead all of the way to win the trial narrowly, before Gollan opted to tip her out over the spring. Her first trial this preparation on December 21st was a real eye-catcher, as she settled last in the five-horse field and worked home well under a strong hold to finish just under two lengths behind Bright Daisy, a subsequent five-length debut winner. Ben Thompson got a feel for this filly in her latest trial at Deagon where she won, so we are happy to see him retain the ride. From barrier four, Thompson and A Call From Heaven will have a couple of options in this 1050m Maiden Plate, but we would expect them to be positive and use the low draw to their advantage. She can make it a winning debut.

Next Best Bet – Mystic Aroma

Peter & Will Hulbert saddle up promising filly Mystic Aroma in what is a competitive Class 2 Handicap on Wednesday afternoon over 1350m. Like A Call From Heaven, this three-year-old filly is by Divine Prophet, out of a Thunder Gulch mare, so she should relish getting to 1350m for the first time. After winning impressively on the Poltrack at the Sunshine Coast first-up this preparation when defeating subsequent winner Not Another, Mystic Aroma was able to go on with the job to win by 2.5 lengths in Class 1 company on December 12 in what was a dominant display both to the eye and on the clock. The stable opted to step her up in grade on Boxing Day where she held her own, running fifth behind Mass Destruction in a very strong Class 3. From barrier seven, Mystic Aroma and her regular rider Mark Du Plessis will be able to find a spot in the first half of the field with some cover behind what looks to be a strong tempo, which will give her a huge chance to show her devastating turn of foot. The top weight in this race, Stormy Rock, did go past Mystic Aroma last time out, but the filly meets him 0.5kg better at the weight, which can be enough to turn around the narrow margin here. The filly can return to the winner’s circle and get her first metropolitan win on Wednesday.

Best Value At Doomben – Air Spirit

Tony Gollan and Ben Thompson combine twice throughout the course of the meeting, and we are pretty confident that they can make it a winning double, when they team up with Air Spirit in the fifth. The five-year-old mare by Spirit Of Boom ran an eye-catching fifth last time out at the Sunshine Coast behind Iolite and subsequent Magic Millions Country Cup winner, Sir Rocket, over 1000m in Benchmark 75 company. Gollan has placed this mare quite well here, finding a race over 1110m in the same grade, so she doesn’t rise at all in weight, staying at 55.5kg. She does do her best racing at Caloundra, but she always trials well at Doomben, so we see no reason why she can’t run a bold race. Drawn ideally in gate two, Thompson will get plenty of cover, which will allow her to be saved for one final shot at them in the straight. Air Spirit doesn’t win out of turn, but she looks to have come back well this prep, so this race isn’t out of her reach.
