Doomben tips for Thursday January 7

Metropolitan racing in Queensland will be run on Thursday’s for the next six weeks instead of the traditional Wednesday. On Thursday January 7, 2021, Doomben will host nine races, with the first set to jump at 12:57pm. The track is rated a Soft 5, with the rail out +5.5m for the entire circumference of the course. Here are our free Doomben tips and best bets.

Best Bet – Race 8 #1 Roman Aureus $3.10

Brian Wakefield’s talented gelding Roman Aureus looks ready to fire third up into his campaign on Thursday. After not missing a place in seven starts last campaign, he was earmarked as a budding star, but failed first-up when favourite over 1200m. Last start, he put in a much improved showing, chasing the in-form Stampe home over 1400m at Eagle Farm. The four-year-old has been allocated the top weight, but he gets Justin Huxtable onboard who claims 1.5kg which is a big bonus. He’s a three time winner at Doomben, and is unbeaten at this track and distance (3:3-0-0). Drawn the inside, he’ll stalk the slow tempo and put them to the sword.

Next Best – Race 1 #3 Reality $1.90

Reality has had just the two career starts for two runner-up performances, so he certainly has ability. Having run into some smart ones in I Am Thirty and Boomnova, he looks to get some respite here against much weaker horses. Drawn out in barrier 10 under Larry Cassidy, he’ll push on and look for a handy spot if they don’t opt to lead. He carries the least amount of weight that he’s had to carry to date with just 57.5kg, so that should make the difference for the Shooting To Win gelding. Put the helmet and pads on punters, he’ll win this time for us.

Best Value – Race 6 #6 Nemingah $26

Edward O’Rourke’s five-year-old gelding, Nemingah returns to the races after going from strength-to-strength last campaign, which included back-to-back wins and a fourth in the Grafton Cup. By Nom Du Jeu, the lightly raced gelding resumes here over 1640m which looks a good starting point after two nice trials, which saw him win his latest over 1000m at Murwillumbah. He’s placed when first-up in the past and has had one look at Doomben for a third placing over 2000m. The soft track will suit, with all three career wins coming on soft going. In what is a very open race, we are confident he can run a drum here at $26 with Sportsbet or check odds with other Australian horse betting sites.
