Doomben should be soft for Stradbroke

Brisbane Racing Club officials are hopeful the Doomben track can be in the soft range for its premier race day with fine weather returning to the region.

The track was rated heavy on Friday morning with stewards to walk it in the afternoon.

The track has received 20mm of rain for the week meaning Saturday’s Stradbroke Handicap meeting is sure to be on a rain-affected surface.

Doomben course manager Jim Roberts said the track had 14mm in the 24 hours to Friday morning on top of the rain earlier in the week.

He said he had no choice but to put the track rating in the heavy range.

“I walked the track on Thursday afternoon and I was confident we would improve by Friday morning but we got more rain overnight,” Roberts said.

“The staff have put a lot of work into the track and it has come back well in the two weeks since Kingsford Smith Cup day.

“As always the weather will play a major role but I would hope with fine conditions and a breeze we can get back to soft by tomorrow.”

The rail will be in the true position on Saturday after being out 4 1/2 metres at the previous meeting.

The Kingsford Smith Cup meeting on May 26 was delayed for 90 minutes midway through the afternoon because of track problems but major work has been carried out on the troubled section.
