Doomben horse racing preview

Doomben is on the quick backup after Saturday’s meeting with eight races to be run on Wednesday on what is predicted to be a Soft 5. The rail will be moved out +8.5m for the entire circumference of the course, and the red light on top of the barriers will flash at 1:25pm local time for the first of the day.

Best BetRace 5 – Ruddock (#1) $2.60 with Sportsbet

Annabel Neasham sends north her classy son of Written Tycoon, Ruddock. A winner of two straight, including a two-length romping at Gosford last start, the three-year-old gelding has been racing in a rich vein of form and can go on with the job in this. Drawn low in barrier three, Jim Byrne will take him to the front and let him roll along over the mile. Ruddock rises 1kg off his last win and steps up to Class 2 level, but the way he won at Canterbury two back and Gosford last start suggests he should take it all in his stride and make it a hat-trick of wins here.

Next BestRace 6 – I Am Thirty (#3) $3.60 with Sportsbet

Ryan Maloney sticks with debut winner I Am Thirty for what will be the three-year-old’s second career start. By I Am Invincible and trained by Bryan & Daniel Guy, the gelding won by 1.25 lengths at the Gold Coast in style three weeks ago over the 1100m journey. He had the job of carting up the rest of the field until the turn and then responded with a strong kick at the 150m to win comfortably under hands and heels. He steps up to 1200m, which looks to suit, and from barrier five should find the front or take a sit in behind the leader pretty easily. He would have no doubt improved off his debut and looks well placed to maintain his perfect record.

Best ValueRace 8 – Perfect Aim (#6) $4.80 with Sportsbet

Perfect Aim got back into the winner’s stall for the first time in 18 months last start at Doomben, and he showed enough for us to think he can go on with the job. Michael Rodd has opted to stick with the gelding and will look to win two straight aboard the five-year-old. Stepping up to 1350m, he finds himself mapping beautifully from barrier three. He races well at this track and will appreciate the sting out of the ground if it stays a Soft 5. He’ll need things to go his way again, given he hasn’t been successful over the seven furlongs, but he was strong enough through the line last time out to suggest he will eat it up.
