What Doomben Races
Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden Street, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, September 11, 2021
First Race 11:47am AEST

HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for Saturday’s nine-race card at Doomben. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is out 2.5m for the entire course, so the track should play evenly throughout the afternoon. The first race – a competitive Fillies & Mares No Metro Wins Handicap over 1200m – is set to jump at 11:47am AEST.

Doomben Best Bet: Shosha

Two horses will be looking to make it three straight wins in the fifth race of the day; Pucko comes down the range from Toowoomba, while Shosha is aiming to do it at the same track and distance as she did at her past two starts. The latter horse faces her biggest test to date in Class 3 company after winning her maiden on August 11 and then backing that up with a Class 1 win on September 1. Stephanie Thornton has ridden the daughter of Deep Impact in both wins, positioning her positively and allowing her to relax in front before kicking clear in the straight, which she will have to do again on Saturday from the outside alley (14). While this field is notably harder than her last two midweek wins, Shosha maps to get the lead all to herself and will be hard to run down again.

Best BetRace 5 – Shosha (#14) $3.90 with Sportsbet

Next Best at Doomben: Ballistic Boy

Quality galloper Ballistic Boy was heavily backed first-up on August 28 over the 1350m course here and the money was spot on, with the five-year-old arriving in the nick of time to win by a tenth of a length over Run For Glory. The son of Smart Missile has a very good record at Doomben, winning three of his nine starts at the track and placing a further four times. The Chris Anderson-trained gelding has had two starts at the track and distance, winning once and placing third on the other occasion, so punters can rest assured that he gets conditions to suit on Saturday. Brad Stewart retains the ride on Saturday, and from barrier four he should settle in the box seat, likely trailing Willo Titto and Blue Soldier, before producing in the straight. The extra distance will suit Ballistic Boy on his quest to making it back-to-back wins at Doomben.

Doomben Value Bet: Peppi La Few

Toby & Trent Edmonds’ six-year-old gelding Peppi La Few was scratched from a race on Wednesday in preference for this assignment, despite looking to have had an absolute mortgage on the midweek task. Having placed runner-up in his last three outings, the son of Pierro now looks ready to peak fourth-up at 1350m, a distance he has a very good record at (12:6-3-0). Drawn ideally in barrier five, Peppi La Few should be able to settle in the first four or five in the run under Brad Stewart and be well and truly within striking distance at the top of the 350m straight at Doomben. Form around subsequent Group 2 winner Phobetor looks good enough to be ultra-competitive in this Class 6 Plate against the likes of Dreamreacher and Roman Aureus. The $8.50 looks tremendous value in the last race of the day, especially considering he was $1.45 on Wednesday prior to his scratching.

Best ValueRace 9 – Peppi La Few (#2) $8.50 with Sportsbet
