HorseBetting’s Queensland racing expert brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the nine-part card at Doomben on Saturday, July 10. The track is rated a Soft 6, and the rail is out just 1m for the entire course. The first race is scheduled to go at 11:43am.

Doomben Best Bet: Axe

Ex-Bjorn Baker gelding Axe has been a completely different horse over the Brisbane Winter Carnival, finishing in the placings in seven of his eight starts this time in. Now with Michael Costa, the son of Written Tycoon comes off back-to-back placings in the Group 3 BRC Sprint and Listed Eye Liner Stakes, where he drew poorly both times and only went down by 1.35 lengths and 0.5 lengths respectively. Drawn in barrier two on Saturday for Jag Guthman-Chester, the in-form four-year-old will either lead or box seat and should prove too good for his rivals over 1200m. While we have slight concerns that this might be an afterthought, we trust the stable and think that Axe can win another before he has a well-earned spell.

Next Best at Doomben: Roman Aureus

Brian Wakefield and Larry Cassidy combine in the penultimate race with Roman Aureus, who looks ready to win second-up. Like Axe, this one comes through a runner-up effort at Ipswich on June 19th, when he ran behind Desert Lord – the current favourite for Sunday’s Glasshouse Handicap. The four-year-old son of Red Element was fantastic late on that day, charging home along the inside to finish alongside Ziemba. Wakefield’s gelding is four from four over this track and distance, and barrier two will give him every possible chance of making it five from five. There is enough speed to set it up for one to run home from the back.

Next Best Again: Kingston’s Here

Kingston’s Here has been in the quinella in five of his six career starts, including both runs this campaign: a four-length victory at the Gold Coast when fresh, and a 1.25-length second to Garopollo over 1200m at Eagle Farm on June 26th when beating home Mass Destruction. Drawn wide in barrier eight, Ben Thompson will look to be within striking distance late and allow the big grey to finish over the top of them. We are confident our three best bets can get the job done, so a three-leg multi at about $17 might be a nice way to play it.
