Doomben Best Best: Montez
Jaden Lloyd sits two wins clear in the Queensland Metropolitan Apprentice Jockeys Premiership and looks primed to extend his lead on Wednesday thanks to a couple of ripper rides. Montez won back-to-back races at this track and distance before being grabbed in the shadows of the post over 1800m at the Gold Coast three weekends ago. The return to the Doomben mile will give this Maryann Brosnan-trained gelding every chance to get back into the winner’s circle on Wednesday. Despite drawing the outside alley in the eight-horse field, Montez maps to get an uncontested lead under Lloyd and will prove hard to catch, especially after the apprentice’s 3kg claim brings the weight down to 59.5kg. He should just be too good.
Doomben Value Bet: Fish On
Seven-year-old gelding Fish On was an eye-catching third at the Sunshine Coast on September 24, chasing hard behind Nicci’s Spirit and He Knows over 1300m. The son of Captain Sonador drops 3kg from that run and maps to get a good run in this race from barrier three over the 1350m. Skye Bogenhuber knows the horse very well, which can only help his bid to get back into the winner’s circle. Fish On has won four times in his 36-start career, but he has filled the placings on nine other occasions. He has been knocking on the door this campaign, and although this is far from a cakewalk, he should run well at big odds.
