Saturday racing tips for Doomben

Doomben plays host to a ripping nine-race card this weekend which is headlined by two Listed races. The track, as always on a Thursday, is rated a Soft 5, but we are likely to see an upgrade by Saturday afternoon. The rail is out +4.5m for the entire circumference, and the first race jumps at 12:23pm local time.

Best BetRace 7 – Baller (#11) $5.50 with Sportsbet

Chris Waller saddles up five-year-old gelding Baller in a 1200m Class 6 plate. The son of High Chaparral made his Queensland debut last start over the 1110m course at this track and was a flashing third behind Boomtown Lass when coming from near last. He drops 3kg from that run, meets Boomtown Lass 1kg better and steps up 90m in trip to a distance that has seen him reign supreme three times in the past. From gate 13, Luke Dittman will have no issues with getting back in the ruck as there is speed to burn up front. If he can let down with the same run he produced first up, he will finish hard over the top of some tiring sprinters.

Next BestRace 8 – The Harrovian (#1) $4.60 with Sportsbet

While this is probably the toughest race The Harrovian has contested in the big smoke since relocating from North Queensland, we cannot ignore him at the price. Looking for 10 in a row, the seven-year-old is simply airborne and continues to win races despite carrying big weights and competing in tricky fields. He has been handed the top weight again here and drops back to 1350m, which is some query, but he has had a month between runs to freshen up and prepare for his first black-type race. Brad Stewart sticks with him, which is a big plus in itself, and should land in a handy spot from barrier seven. The $4.60 is a great price for a horse who simply loves to win.

Best ValueRace 9 – L’Cosmo (#19) $18 with Sportsbet

In what is the hardest race of the afternoon, we are keen to back L’Cosmo each way if she can gain a start (currently needs one more scratching). David Vandyke’s four-year-old Lonhro mare caught the eye in her first Queensland start, and then again when she won a trial very impressively under a hard hold. After bombing the start and being three lengths off the second-last horse along the back, she made good ground to run second to Thine Is The Power at this track and trip three weeks ago. Looking elsewhere in the event L’Cosmo doesn’t make the final field, Gypsy Toff also appears over the odds at around $51 after running a bold fourth at the Sunshine Coast just seven days ago.
