Doomben betting odds & quaddie tips – Saturday, 5 September 2020

Sure Knee

Racing heads to Doomben on Saturday for a nine-part card. The track is rated a Soft 5 at the time of writing, but with no rain forecasted for Brisbane on Friday, we can expect an upgrade to a Good 4 on Saturday. The rail goes into the +2m position for the entire circumference of the course. Race 1 will jump at 11:48am AEST, with the final event on the program at 4:38pm. There’s a number of short-priced favourites on the card which all look hard to beat, but we are going to steer clear of those and look for a touch more value.

Best Bet
Race 4 – Astro Boy Toy @ $2.40 Sportsbet

We were keen on Astro Boy Toy a fortnight ago at this course when he ran third behind Chauffeur and Chico Milagro over 1200m. He was caught wide in the early stages in that race, which cost him in the end given how much he had to work to get across the field. He kicked strongly in the straight and hit the front but just peaked in the final 50m. Connections elected to scratch him from the Class 3 earlier on in the program in preference for this One Metro Win race, which we think was a positive move. Up to 1350m here will suit, and he will be much fitter now after his first up run. Drawn in barrier seven, he should be able to get across easily enough to sit on the speed and race away with it. Ben Thompson takes over the riding on the Deep Field gelding and will hope to keep his good Queensland form going here.

Next Best
Race 9 – Fanaar @ $4.50 Sportsbet

Trinity Bannon brings her promising gelding Fanaar to town after a last-start defeat at the Townsville Cup meeting. He was a heavily backed commodity on that day and was three lengths off the second-last horse on the turn before losing by a head-bob. Prior to that run, he beat the talented I Did It Again by a convincing 2L margin at Mackay. Justin Stanley has a great affiliation with both horse and trainer and should be able to settle a bit closer from the ideal draw in barrier five. There is plenty of speed in the race, which will suit, and he should finish right over the top for the North Queenslanders. At around the $4.50 mark, Fanaar looks a superb play in the final event on the program.

Best Value
Race 7 – Superbowl Sunday @ $7.50 Sportsbet

Chris Munce and Justin Huxtable combine in the seventh with last-start winner Superbowl Sunday. In what was a tough all-the-way win 10 days ago at this course, he was simply too good for $1.20 favourite Express Fantasy. He goes to Benchmark 72 level here and drops 1kg in weight thanks to Huxtable’s 2kg claim. Drawn well in barrier five, he should have the front all to himself given the lack of speed in the race. With the rail out 2m, it could play into the leader’s favour. He has only had one run over a mile, which came over 12 months ago in his New South Wales days when fifth behind the very handy Soldier of Love. He is rock-hard fit and racing in superb form, so he can win this.
