Dead horses on Victorian farm spark probe

The discovery of up to 100 dead horses on a Victorian property is being investigated by Racing Victoria and the RSPCA.

The horses are believed to have been brought to the property, north of Romsey, for disposal after being euthanised by their owners or vets, the Macedon Ranges Shire Council says.

Between 75 and 100 horses were found dead at the site containing discarded building material following a complaint to the council, which is also investigating.

A spokeswoman could not say when the horses were found but there was no evidence of starvation or other cruelty involved.

The shire was working with the property owner to ensure the remains were properly disposed and they have been told not to not collect any more dead stock.
