The David Coles AM Stakes (formerly National Stakes) is the first of the black-type events on Morphettville’s nine-race card on Saturday afternoon. The Group 3 for two-year-olds has attracted a field of nine juveniles, with three last-start winners set to go around. The two Victorian raiders, Butter Blonde and I Am In The Mood, are set to duke it out for early supremacy, with race favourite Karacasu and Heresy settling towards the rear of the field for the 1200m sprint. HorseBetting.com.au brings you the best bets, top odds and betting strategy for the Group 3 David Coles AM Stakes, which is set to jump at 12:01pm local time.

David Coles AM Stakes preview

The James Cummings-trained Salamanders comes to the David Coles AM Stakes off an impressive two-length victory at Geelong on April 30. The Animal Kingdom filly was luckless at Mornington the start prior and deserved his maiden win. She took up the running at Geelong, but with plenty of early speed in this race, we expect her to take a sit off that speed before savaging the line in the concluding stages. Jamie Kah in the saddle is always a plus.

Our top selection’s stablemate Heresy threw away a victory due to poor barrier manners at Geelong on April 20. The Street Boss filly comes to Morphettville with high expectations from the stable, and if she shows better behaviour in the gates, she cannot be discounted. Damien Oliver should take her back to the rear of the field from barrier three, and with a similar turn of foot to what she produced at Geelong, she should be in this right up to her nose.

Karacasu is a deserving favourite, but from barrier nine he will be giving the leaders a fair start. The locally trained gelding is yet to finish outside of the quinella, but in the concluding stages of the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes he looked to peak on his run with 57.5kg on his back. He gets the same weight here and will need a fair amount of luck, and for that reason we can not justify his $3 quote.
